S30V Spyderco Military vs. BM 710....anybody own both?

I carry my 710 more than a Milli, but once I score a M390 Milli(probably easier to find than a 710 M390), I think that is going to change.

Both my Contego and 710, sometimes they deploy in my pocket(when extracting), so they both have made me bleed my own BLOOD!!!

This Manix2 XL video compares them both and has some interesting opinions on them.

It's a close call. My best 710 has an M-390 blade and a custom handle. I don't like the recurve, but I love the AXIS lock. My best Military has a Titanium handle with an S-90 blade. The thing is a little heavy, but the handle is bulllet proof.View attachment 393906

I feel a new comer into the knife game will like a military more. . .But after time and experience, a 710 will give you more confidence, and with that follows a sense a serious build quality.

Having owned a 710 and sold it, my vote is for the 810 Contego. Same size blade, rides great in the pocket, handle is slightly shorter than the Military, much better handle than either the Mili or the 710 due to contoured G10 (as opposed to slab sides on the others), and it's CPM-M4. Oh, and the Axis lock and tip-up carry. Never had an Axis lock open in my pocket. I've had a liner lock do that.

You know, I almost said the 810 too. The Contego is my hands down favorite still in production, production knife.

I'd say to the OP, you can't go wrong with either the 710 or Military and between the two like I said I'd go with the 710 but over both of them I would choose the Contego and in a big way.

I've also never had an AXIS lock knife open in my pocket. A liner lock yes but never an AXIS lock.

Best of luck!

Sorry. Trying to understand what you mean. In what way does it give you more confidence and how is the build quality better? Just asking. I have a military but not a 710 to compare it to.

Confidence that it won't fail you as a working tool. And something built that can handle twice as much abuse as the other mentioned, gives me a sense a quality towards the product. I have broken a military in the field. My 710 has been though harder work and still in tact. Sorry just my opinion, discard if you don't like :)

OK. ;) There aren't many people who think a 710 - and I bought one of the first produced, right after Doug Ritter published his review back at the end of 1998 - can take twice the punishment that a Military can take.

I know they are both excellent knives and I am a BM/Spyderco guy, looking for a larger EDC blade than what I usually carry, head to head what do guy's think? interested in ergo's and the like. Thanks!

Head to head after almost 15 years, I think it's a draw if you compare the 710 to the linerlock Military. If you compare the 710 to the framelock version of the Military, I think the nod goes to the Military - not because it's stronger but because in my opinion that framelock Military is much easier to deal with when my hands are getting numb and/or I'm wearing glove - but that's a YMMV point.

710 all the way. It feels like a more substantial knife and the Axis lock is tough and plain more fun to use. Millie is one of the few USA-made Spyderco models, though. It's a good knife, too.

I have both, use both. The Military sees way more pocket time though. I prefer a tip down carry, and in my opinion the Military does it right. I prefer a little higher carry for ease of access. I prefer the blade on the Military a little more too, probably due to the recurve on the 710. I do love the axis lock on the 710.

I think both are great knives. I currently have a new Military being shipped to me. The 710 is in my edc rotation. The Military is not. Try to hold both in hand. You ll be happy with either of the ones you prefer.
