Well it is a good thing it had the Paul Bos heat treat, could have been much worse. Also had a Paramilitary 2 that looked like a serrated knife after a few months. Will say that after regrinding the factory edge it seemed fine. Just seem to have better luck with vg10?

I had the same thing happen-- on a much smaller scale-- to an s30v Manix 2. Those zip ties are sturdy.

I came here to see the video of you fighting a dinosaur with your S30V knife. False advertising! :grumpy::D

I'm guessing you got the knife snugly underneath and gave a twist. However you did it, I would not have expected a chunk that size to be removed.

Did you send it back to buck to have it replaced and or reground? Interested in seeing a pic of the modified blade if you did.

Yea, i know twisting is bad, but holy cow i was not expecting a chunk like that to be removed.

Don't think there is any saving that blade lol. I have thought about sending it back, I did like the knife. I'll just buy more spydies.

Send it back to Buck. They have an awesome warrantee department. I am sure they will most likely replace your blade and send it back to you.

They'll probably replace it for free considering the circumstances of the incident.

There must have been a heat treatment problem. I've never known Bucks to be anything but 100% reliable. I bet if you send it back to Buck, they'll replace it for you.

Still don't know what the dinosaur has to do with it? But I have always found S30v a little chippy, but not that much

OUCH!!! That has GOT to be bad heat treat!
I did a quick google-fu and most of the zip tie removal tools are HT to 53-58 rc!

I will say be had chilling issues with S30V before too. Nothin like that though!

VG10 is way tougher than S30V, but won't hold an edge very long, and rolls really easily when under use too, so that's just kind of the trade off.

I still agree this was likely an issue with heat treat, but not a super surprising one, since I've seen several companies that routinely have issues with heat treating S30V and it chipping all the time...which is why I like S35VN exponentially more than S30V now.

thats pretty bad...

I spent a good part of last saturday cutting pallet straps and zip ties with my 420hc Gerber without any issues.

I hope thats a heat treat problem. It could also be that the hollow grind was excessively deep leaving the edge too thin.
