s30v

How long do you guys think s30v will still be considered a high end steel? Im seeing more and more exotic steels recently and it used to be s30v was the best? whats your opinion on this steel by the way for edc folders? And lastly how does it compare with vg10 or s35vn? Thanks!

Well. The International Council on Super Steels, resolved, in their 1989 conference in Bern, Switzerland, that:

"A steel, once declared "super" or "high end," will retain this status only for a period of a maximum of 4 years, and this status can be revoked at any time prior, if agreed upon by a majority of members of the ICSS."

You can look it up.

Thats some bad luck you have. Ive got a benchmade 162 coming in tomorrow and ive literally watched every review on youtube i even searched blade forums for everything i could find on this knife and this is the first i have heard a rolled edge on the 162. Benchmade put out several videos of them pounding it in to douglas fir with zero damage, it still shaved hair off peters arm. There tip strength test was also good. It sounds like you had a dud and never let the manufacturer make it right.
My pm2 in s30v never chipped on me.. and ive cut much worse than tape. Your luck must be really bad to get bad s30v from many reputable companies ZT,benchmade,spyderco,strider... sounds a little off to me. Not trying to be rude just being real about how your story sounds i mean come on lol If s30v was as bad as you claim why do many of the companies still use it with great success? If it was how you make it seem i doubt they would use it for as long as they have. just my humble opinion.

Trust me, it was unreal to me too. Granted, the ZT was a used blem, but was factory edge supposedly, so can't really say much about that. The Strider was used as well. The other three were brand new. Don't know what I could possibly have done wrong, bad luck I guess.

Im REALLY hoping the 162 bushcrafter holds up well, i was thinking of using it for awhile and doing a review. I didnt mean to come off rude sometimes things seem hard to believe but that doesnt make it untrue so my apologies. Its crazy the drastic difference people experience with the same steel, wish me luck on the 162 ha.

I do wish you luck on it. Gorgeous knife. Mine just sat around though so I finally traded it away. I already had a Spyderco Schempp Rock, which I use far more than I did the Benchmade. If the weather holds out, I'd like to go camping soon and test out the ESEE 5 I have. Its a monster. Maybe tonight I'll see if I can cut through an Escalade or Suburban.

lol test out the esee 5 i could think of a few ways..attach to a rope and anchor a boat, trying to cut a bk2 in half, shooting with 50cal haha i kid i kid

I have one I bought before the price increase thing, and its been a decent blade. I don't think the heat treat on the blade is particularly good, but it has been a good camp knife. Nice sheath, deerskin with firerod holder. Otherwise, its "ok."

K.o.d it seems you've miss spoken here you said bushcrafter in s30v rolled its edge on a pumpkin the first time you used it and never used it again... in your previous post you say it was a decent camp knife.... just lookin for some clarification

Do you have any pictures of your pumpkin destroyed edge? I'm calling you out pilgrim.

Actually I don't have any pics. I got rid of it quite some time ago. I said it was a decent camp knife. Not that I actually used it, but at the time I thought it would be good for miscellaneous camp chores. One thing I will say is that it came to me very, very dull. I did in fact send this one in for warranty service, and it came back very nice. However, it was winter, and it sat and sat, and so finally this summer I sold it as I was using the Schempp Rock instead. I liked that you could lash it to a branch and make a spear or whatnot, the fire rod holder in the sheath.

I do have a picture of the pumpkin though:

I guess we all have our preferences based on experience and such. Personally, I have over 30 knives (about 10% or so of my collection) that are in S30V and some have gotten quite a bit of hard use - some have not. But all-in-all, I have never had S30V chip or roll on me. Some versions do hold their edge better than others. IMHO, the S30V that Buck uses with Paul Bos HT is the best of the best (speaking strictly S30V) as far as holding an edge, but that is just observation without any legitimate testing to prove that point.

I like S30V and as I said earlier in another thread somewhere/somewhen, I have no problem with buying a mid-range knife with an S30V blade, especially if it is intended as a user.

BTW, KOD, love the pic! Cute kid. ;)

I got my 162 bushcrafter today, WOW this knife is awesome I immediately took it outside, i batonned a seasoned beech branch about 3inches in diameter and started a one stick fire by using the edge to scrape the dry wood creating a dust that easily takes a spark from my fire rod. After the fire I chopped on and batonned ASH,MAPLE,BEECH,BIRCH,CHERRY and limbed a dead spruce. ZERO damage to the edge and i took photos. I even chopped on seasoned cherry which is VERY hard its been used as tool handles because of its strength and hardness ZERO damage. I guess K.O.D gets alot of duds...

I am SO glad it worked well for you. Enjoy it. My relief that I just have bad juju.

Throw salt over your shoulder, avoid breaking mirrors, and stay away from walking under ladders lol kidding aside thanks i really like the knife most of my blades have been carbon steel or INFI so this is the first stainless fixed blade ive had. as i was chopping on that twisted knotted seasoned cherry i wasnt sure how the s30v would hold up but to my surprise it did very well.

He does take the road less travelled by... :)

I have been using Bucks S30V and CPM 154 for our deer doins for several years now. Easily stays sharp 3 to 4 times longer than their 420HC.
For me, probably be the last good steel I will ever buy. Old age and fixed income will keep me from trying the new steels yet to come.

I have a " Few" Benchmade 162's , so the one I use mainly I'm not afraid to use hard. I've wailed that knife through knots and all sorts of other nonsense , thinking that maybe this edge will fail or deform in some way. It hasn't in over 2 years of unbridled use.

What I will say is that what I've read and experienced about not letting S30V get too dull demanding a lengthy sharpening session seems true, but it holds it's edge for long time once you do get it sharp again. Toothy edges seem to work better than polished.

It's one of my few bushcraft knives I have multiples of as I like it so much , and there's no way I would of made such an investment like that had my original let me down in any way. Neither have any others I've used. That said , I am a pretty big fan of S30V, and like what I've experienced so far.

I agree with your post, a lot of the "reviews" complained about the sheath being useless.. I disagree I actually like the sheath.S30v is a good steel in my book. Yesterday I was thinking about replacing the handle tubes with screws... any ideas?

I am not a fan of screws myself. I've had them loosen in the field before. Jmo. The titanium tubes on the bushcrafter are on there really tight and there won't be any rust issues under the scales with S30V. Handle attachment strength is really important to me , and the 162 is incredibly strong. My honest advice is to leave it as is , unless you want to make new handles for it. The holes in the tang where the handle goes will be at least as big as the O.D. of the tubes as well.

I'm really impressed how this steel has held up , at least on this knife. I've lowered the edge angle down to around 15 deg. and still no problems. How that fellow had edge rolling cutting a pumpkin top really astonishes me.
