Sacrilege and Blasphemy - the Folding Utility Knife

I have no shortage of thorns and vines on a nature trail just down the block from here, on the way to a nice lake for sitting around on a sunny day, slcing up my lunch with a ... boxcutter?

I take purpose-built cutlery to picnics. My folder isn't that good at performing domestic cooking slice-n-dicery.

I don't care how well they cut, I don't like how they look and would much rather have a real knife. I don't want to replace my blade I want to sharpen it. ;)

I feel the same way.I don't buy my knives to sit in the safe.I use them.

You can sharpen those blades, they even make them out of HSS. Most don't tend to sharpen them because the time spent sharpening them costs more than to replace them.

Only thing I'm curious about---Is where exactly do you live??

I can't recall ever being attacked by an animal in my 43--almost 44 years.

If I got attacked by an animal, I would carry a Gun, not a knife. Even a club or Bat is a better option.

In suburban NJ, guns are not an obvious option. There is a reason that hikers often carry some kind of stick. Clubs ARE a common and effective option in holding off obnoxious animals. But a knife is useful for finishing them off if it comes to that.

In my world,...

...isn't it just common sense?

I'm glad that a folding utility knife does everything you need it to, and so I'd say that since that seems to be a priority for you then you should stick with them. For my money, there's an @$$ for every seat, and while one of these would work for working, in my private life they most certainly do NOT fit all situations. Can you imagine going to a nice dinner, you're sitting down and notice an annoying thread on your suit so you pull out a box cutter to cut it? Not cool in MY world.

As for common sense, what about knife collecting seems to you to be based on common sense? Collecting anything is not about common sense, and never has been.

what kind of animal that has attacked you several times, lives in your part of town with a shortage of jungle?

I carry a crooktop cane, not a baseball bat. I don't need scraps of skull and brain on my cane.

Where do I get HSS ones?

Try Lenox. They make the best cutting tools/blades availible. I use the Lenox Gold brand, expensive but worth it. You can also sharpen them on a Lansky. One other thing, as Cliff noted, the Lenox blades have multiple slots so you can extend the blade a little longer if needed. You uasually can't close a folding knife in this position, but life is full of compromise. Duh!, Home Depot and Lowes.

But blood on your knife is OK? Just stick a hankee in your back pocket ya' big baby! :D

A quick flick of the wrist and the throat's slit, no pounding and crushing to break through the bone. Wiping a little blood off metal is easy with weeds all around, but getting gunk off and out of the wood is messy.

Trust me, I know whereof I speak.

I carry my nice folder well cuz I want too. Its not commen sense, as and SA/IT guy if I need to open 100 pc's I will use a box cutter for the job, but if I need to open 3 I'll use my sebbie or ddr or strider etc. etc. Knives are nice for other things I cut like zip ties, sandwiches etc. I use my several hundred dollar knives cuz I can more than anything else, and I dont feel bad about it. I see your point about using a box cutter and they are fantastic for what they are for, but there is many a circumstance either in the office or out camping that I want a knife and will use it.

I carry two knives . One for every day use and one sturdier razor sharp knife .
As has been said get past the mystery of sharpening and its a breeze . Some people prefer wall hangers , some people prefer to make use of their knives . That is what they are for .

I use mine as a loner cause I'm not handing my Endura or anything to someone not responsible enough to carry thier own knife, dont need to get my knife back with a chunk of the edge missing or the tip snapper off btdt almost strangled the idiot. This way they screw it up oh well I carry a 5 pk of extra blades so in less than a min it's good to go again.
