Sad News about Danny Fletcher

Rest in Peace Danny. .May all of the pain you endured be gone and your spirit soaring.
You will be missed.
 
Damn, I didn't even know that he was sick. My bad for not showing up here regularly anymore. I knew he had relocated to Plano Texas a few years back but only kept in touch sporadically with him.

Danny traded me the original Rod Allen Hanshee, which I still have, and I also ended up with the first 25" custom order Gelbu Special which Danny wrapped around a 2" thick stick of green bamboo in Japan. He had the angle off just slightly, and the green bamboo did the rest. Danny posted a video of the bending here, and then went back and corrected his technique. We kidded him a bit about it, but he was a great sport about the miscalculation. I straightened and etched the blade and keep it proudly.

Danny conducted a shuriken-jitsu seminar for several of us (Aardvark {Joe} and also Ted Wilson) at a dojo in Santa Cruz a few years back. He also demonstrated incredible technique using a wooden practice bokken, and it was amazing to see him just walk gently into someone and within seconds have them flat on their back and be in complete control of the situation. He was an incredibly gifted martial artist and it was an honor to have known him.

Great seeing you around, Norm. Danny sure was one of the good ones. Thanks for sharing some stories. I remember the bamboo bending GS.:)
 
It seems like every time I check in here I see that someone else has died. I'm just so sad to hear this. I wish his family well.
 
Smoke from California for Danny and his family. I was lucky enough to meet him and I was amazed by his talent. I'll miss his posts.
 
I somehow missed this one and am devasted. I made some knives for him and he was instrumental in the creation of my DanKura model. I definitely have some fond memories...mostly of lots of phone calls and emails....and watching the video at Nasty's place.

I remember how we used to give him so much grief when he first came to HI posting about being a modern ninja. Then, we soon realized he truly had devoted his life to it. He had a passion for it indeed. So much hope, and also so much loss in his life.

We never got to meet in person despite being in neighboring states. Always talked about it...never happened.

reading all these posts lets me think this was a great friend and had history with a quite a few of you.sad loss, prayers sent out.
 
I am so sad to hear this. I too interacted a lot with Danny. We had a lot of conversations, and a fair amount of disagreements, but they were all friendly, and there was always a good bunch of LOL type PM's too. He was a good friend. I will miss him.
 
I think it would make Danny smile having you guys posting again in this thread:) Good to see you Dan and Andy. In these situations, the glass is half full when we have old friends popping in to share their thoughts.

Thanks for this info. I ordered both books last week and they just arrived. I've only had time to browse the "Lessons in Budo" book, but I look forward to reading it. The book deals mostly with the philosophy, spirit, art and poetry of the subject rather than "techniques" and is well written with a good sense of humor.

I didn't know Danny except for running across some of his earlier posts in this forum, but I'm sorry that he's gone.

Since I can't see the DOTD pics I don't visit here often.

So sad to hear about Danny.

He always seemed to be such a big kid and full of enthusiasm.

I could always tell in Japan he was homesick for the US.

Then when he returned here to get sick and now die. That's too bad!

I remember setting in Nasty's living room and watching Danny's khuk vid with him in his pajamas demonstrating self defense techniques and just feeling so good that here we were all of who came together over khuks and even one of our number who couldn't be there with us had sent us a video message so he could sort of join the gathering in some way.

Hope Danny is hooking up with Yvsa, Brian In Chi up there and our other departed forumites who have brought a lot of joy to us over the years. He was fun.

I had no idea he was sick.
Back when he came back to Plano we went to a gunshow together. Although he was 10 years older than I we both were raised in Plano and live here. I remember him at the gunshow looking at Double Barreled elephant guns and large caliber long range rifles. He cracked me up when he saw an old German WWI anti tank rifle and asked if they still made brass for it!
At the end of the show gave me a old Japanese saw that he picked up for a song when he was over in Japan. I use it on trim work on a lot of the home improvement projects that I do, and I've wondered often how things were going for him.

I studied Aikido throughout college and then grew up and found a job.
Danny lived the life and became what he loved.

I never got to know him well, but I always figured that he would be somewhere around North Dallas.
I'm going to have to order his books.

He will be missed.
