Sad Umnumzaan Story

I hate being a dick to my friends when they ask but I always tell them no...to prevent situations like yours from happening, which is really unfortunate by the way.

Sorry for the damage to such a fine knife. I understand your anger. But my own temperament is much different.

One criterion for my EDC is that it can handle whatever my lifestyle throws at it.

And I consider the friend at my side to be worth FAR MORE than the knife in my pocket.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like they dropped it tip first. A 3' drop into a hard floor will easily chip off the tip of many folders.

Did you mention how expensive that little knife to them? I don't think the average people knows that there are certain folding knives worth several hundred bucks, not when all they're exposed to are $10 - $50 folders.

6 pack of beers: $5 CRK Umnumzaan: $400 1 a-hole apparently trying to do a speed draw too close to a stainless kitchen countertop: Frickin priceless. Cool thing is,...new friends are free.* ;)

What a moron... I feel your pain.....

Perhaps my neighbor's flea marketing motto quote applies here:

"Its pretty, Its nice and fun to hold, break it, consider it sold"

I never let non knive people handle my knife. I don't even show them my knives the first place because they just don't give a sh#t about knives.

Very sorry to hear the misfortune fallen upon your umnumzaan. I believe that kind of damage is very easy to repair, and you don't have to replace the blade. Repairing it will not alter the shape of the blade.

Wow, what a story.
Certainly worth sending it back  not to mention blade replacement...

You should ask CRK to put it in a blister pack. Then, you can carry it around, have that warm feeling that your little fragile amulet is safe and even lend it to oher people without worries.

you should sharpen your knife...buy it a dress or friencken put it away...or use it like it was designed to be used....it is a tool....use it...or you lose out on your investment...............

Years ago, I walked into the office of my supervisor in my new job at an electric utility.. He had a saleman in his office trying to sell us a line of pvc conduit. My supervisor was dropping the conduit, stomping on it, etc., in an impromptu test. This was before I was a bona-fide knife nut, but I always had an Uncle Henry Trapper in my pocket.
He looked at me and asked if I had a knife on me.
"Not to whittle on conduit with." I replied.

The moral of this tale: If I wouldn't let my supervisor use my knife inappropriately, I surely am not going to let anyone else do so.

Sorry to hear of your story. I would love to hear the details. It sounds like your "friend" was jealous of your fine tool, and may have purposely damaged it. I would find new friends. I never loan a fine tool, or even show it to an ignorant a** hole. They never ever appreciate it, and you will only be sorry in the end.

I'm sorry to hear about your Zaan.Alcohol + friends + expensive toys = disaster

I've only lent out my EDC,AFTER explaining to them what it cost & if they broke it,or damaged it in any way, they would be responsible for replacing it.Most decline ;)

+1

I probably loan out my knife 3 or 4 times a month to friends. Never had to give a speech about the cost of the knife or threaten them with repair if it came back broke, but then again, it never has.
Being in the military, I'd rather have good friends than a good knife, though a good knife comes pretty close.
Guess we're all different.

no need to replace the whole blade, once CRK fixes it, you can't tell the difference. Unless a whole chunk broke off, and that is not normal.

I don't mean to sound like a douche, but he didn't "lend out" the knife, for some unknown task, like we've all done. He just let some friends check it out. The mistake was to do so while said friends had been drinking, and being near a stainless steel surface. My best friend has broken MANY of my knives, usually by throwing them into a tree, deck, etc.. But I have also broken or damaged many of my own knives in much the same way, and he's still my best friend (BTW, he's also lost almost every knife I've given him, and I've learned my lessons). It sounds like the OP has already sent the knife in to be repaired, but doing it yourself and having an ugly, yet functional knife as a result could probably have been a better reminder (my Ronin is mine). Yet I digress. The main problem here is obviously the author's taste in beer. It should come in twelves or twenty-fours, and cost more than five dollars a sixer, in any case. :D

Yeah, that would make me sick too. I never let anyone hold my seb unless it was one of my friends that knew how to handle knives. In fact, just the other day I broke that rule and let a guy check out my slipjoint (queen canoe) and he tried to flip it open by the blade like some kind of spyderdrop:barf:
Luckily it's fine, but I probably won't let it leave my hands again.

One time in the woods I ran into some alcohol fueled idiots that tried to "test" my spyderco mini persian's sharpness by chopping the edge into a park bench (wooden thank god). Somehow the edge was perfectly fine, musta been a perfect hit, but it scared the hell out of me. Especially the part where he started wielding it like a weapon.

X2

Most of my friends/co-workers that would have need of a knife carry their own, so I don't often find mine being requested.

If the borrower was a true friend, I wouldn't sweat the small stuff. Then again, I'm confident my friends would step up and repair/replace the damaged item, knife or otherwise.

Now a friend of a friend or a stranger, probably keep it in my pocket.

1. CRK does replace blades -- they replaced a small Seb blade for me, I think it was about $125 -- don't quote me on that. BUT,

2. Let CRK regrind the tip and learn to live with it. It will remind you:

3. NOT to loan a decent knife to anyone, either to use or inspect.

4. Then buy and carry a SAK Tinker or Cadet for < $20, and use that as a loaner.
