Safer way to close a folder ?

I've never really noticed someone closing a folder by holding the spine against the palm and bringing the handles down toward the blade with the other hand. Perhaps this is the safest way to close a folder as the edge is not moving toward the hand. Please see the 6:30 mark in this video. What do you think ?

Actually, when it comes to some knives like the douk-douk, CS pocket bushman and others which many complain about cutting themselves while closing, I find that holding the spine and closing the HANDLE onto the blade works very well. Try it, you may like it :D or maybe not :(.

Bringing the handle down towards the blade is just as dangerous as the other way around. What if your fingers end up in the path of the edge either by gripping around the handle or around the blade? :D The safest way (barring having a professional close the knife for you and handing it over in a protective case ;)) must be to disengage the lock while holding the blade with the other hand and then hold on to both the handle and blade as you close the knife slowly without using much force. That'll give you time to notice that a finger is about to get cut before it happens, hopefully.

If that scares you, come over and watch me close a Balisong.

Bring bandages, I'm still not very good. And beer.

Craft beer.

I second this :D

If closing the knife is what you're worried about, it seems to me you're using your knife wrong honestly ;) :D

I throw it up in the air and catch the blade with my mouth, and then punch the handle closed.
:D

I close everything I own one handed. Not with my thigh or my other hand. Deactivate the lock with my thumb, and then use my first finger to close it.

Haha, thanks I needed a laugh today.

You just have to know your knife... and make sure no part of you is in the way of the cutting edge.

I have honestly not really ever thought about this.

I guess the safest way for most knives would be with two hands, and that is how I would teach those new to knives to close them.

But I open and close everything I own with one hand, with the exception of most slipjoints, my opinel, and occasionally my svord peasant, and I don't feel unsafe in the slightest. Although, I do mostly own liner locks, so I'm not as confident/quick with backlocks.

If safety/avoiding cuts is your primary concern, then a folder may not be for you. I'd stick with fixed blades or hell maybe even safety scissors are called for.

Craft beer is way overrated . :roll eyes: I will bring Belgian ale. You invite the ladies - three for each of us (brunette, redhead, and blonde). Fair deal ? :D

Pfft!!!

This is the mecha of beer and it's fresh. A beer that travels 20 yards is a helluva thing. ;)

To the OP: Don't listen to these goofs. You have to learn some time. I can't tell you how many times I've loaned a knife out just to have someone say "how do you close this?" Then I have to think for a second because being asked how to close a SAK is a bit of a sideways question for a knife guy. :D

Same here with lockbacks, or at least spydercos with their choils. I disengage the lock and let the blade drop about halfway, which is then stopped by my pointer finger hitting the choil. Then I grip the handles of the knife with four of my fingers and close it with my pointer finger.
