Sage 1 vs. Sage 2

I have the Sage I, am about to purchase the II
The only thing that's holding me back, is the cost for a II
Up here its close to $200.00 being its a RIL lock and titanium it makes it all worth it, right? :p

Ah,...Maybe.

I paid $139US including shipping a few weeks ago, but prices fluctuate and I just checked ebay and the lowest I saw was $155.50 (ships worldwide). The Sage 2 is a really great knife. The quality is outstanding. I love the open frame titanium construction and the Reeve frame lock.

The Sage 2 is my nicest knife, but I've never spent $200 for a single knife and while I've wanted a Sage 2 since they first came out it was only when the prices dropped that I could justify the expense. Having said that the knife is being discontinued so I don't see it getting any cheaper. If you have the money and want it I'd say go for it. It truly is a great knife.

I've decided to reduce my knife purchases this year so I can save up and buy a Sebenza. For a while I debated whether I should get a small or large. Now there is no debate. I'll get a large because I already have the Sage 2 and I don't see the Sebenza replacing the Sage for me. The Sage 2 is just that good.

Check out ebay. Maybe you can get it for less than $200.

cgmblade Thanks a bunch for your thoughts, Its funny were on the same thought pattern for 2010
I am cutting down big time this year, on my purchases as you are.
Also I purchased a large Sebenza, two months ago, and decided that I should have the Sage Ti to complement it. Were a strange bunch us afi's :p

I think the Sage 2 will compliment your large Sebenza very well. At least I hope it does because that's my plan, lol.:)

How do you like your Sebenza? Having grown so accustomed to Spyderco's ergonomics the straight handle of the Sebenza causes me to wonder how comfortable it is to use.

What model Sebebza did you get; Regular, Classic, or 21? I'm kinda attracted to the blade profile of the Regular and was thinking about trying to find a used one.

To tell you the truth, I'm not real happy with the sebi.
Its a Classic, with the straight Ahead graphics, beautiful knife and of course as always stated, the fit and finish is superb.
The straight hard handle just don't work for me, I'm just so spoiled by the comfortable handles of my Spyderco,s. Just recently I received a Spyderco Bradley, and I would be willing to pay a lot more for it as the fit a finish is also fantastic! The knife is for me more ergonomic and also appears to one tough user, as the Sebenza is.

You're confirming my fears regarding the ergonomics, but I don't think I'll be satisfied until I try one for myself.

The Bradley looks like a nice knife. I know it's not the same thing but I just got a Stretch FRN VG-10 which has a somewhat similar blade shape. Very nice knife.

The Stretch is has perfect ergonomics I have three top Spydie's
#1 the Stretch
#2 the Para
#3 the Bradley for the heavy weight days, love it!

You wont be happy until you have tried the Sebi, I know I would have been bugged until I had one. If you like it that's great! :D
Maybe someday I'll learn to appreciate mine as much as others do theirs.

Let me know when you get it..

I bought the sage 2 first ($142) and being so impressed, the sage 1 ($89) about 3 weeks later. It's caused a bit of problem every morning deciding which one to carry. I should add that I find more upside to the sage 1 than the sage 2 even though I think the sage 2 is a better looking knife. First and foremost the grip is much better, this translates to the pocket as well as I don't feel nervous about the knife leaving my pocket. The Ti version doesn't grip your pants as well with the equivalent clip. Also the sage 1 doesn't feel cold in your bare hands on a cold day. I also think it was a hair sharper out of the box than the sage 2 (both were wicked sharp - in fact sharpest knives I've ever received out of the box). The sage 2 deploys faster than the sage 1 but it's got more reps since I've had it longer. The spydie hole and jimping on the thumb ramp / index finger choil area perfectly executed on this knife - phenomenal ergos.

Only knocks I have is that my sage 2 arrived with what I can only describe as incomplete polish on one side of the blade. There was a rather large dark spot (covered about 40% surface) in the steel. Just a darker shade in the steel, not rust or anything of the sort. It can only be seen if held at the proper angle to illuminate it. It seems to have gotten smaller as I use the blade and wipe it down. In fact, as I look at now, I can barely make it out. Regardless, they have both given rest to my kershaws blur & skyline, bm 710, tenacious, and a handful of others. All knives that I really love and would carry if not for these beauties. Lastly, I wish they were "Golden" spydies and I wish they had a lanyard hole. That said, I will no doubt buy subsequent versions of the sage as soon as I find them at a price I'm willing to pay.

Welcome to Bladeforums. I too bought the Sage 2 first and just got the Sage 1 recently. Both are great knives.

I too own both. I thought i would like the 2 more than the 1 but that simply is not the case. They are both great, i like them both the same. I will admitt that i do feel i got alot more knife for my money with the 1 (63 bucks compared to 155). Having said that, i dont in anyway think i didnt get my moneys worth for the 2 i just realize i got a great deal on the 1. I love the texture, and dressed up appearance of the 1. With the 2 i enjoy the CRI lock and the titanium is not slippery like a SS model. I know it seems like it would be but its not. Also the wonderful ergos of both can not be over emphasized! I own 49 spidies last time i counted, and for my off work edc it does not get any better!

The sage 2 is my favorite Spyderco. It's simple, strong design is very confidence inspiring. It' razor sharp, works flawlessly and the simple stripped down look is dead sexy. When I was at the store I looked at both, and the sage 2 grabbed me immediately. The sage 1 is sweet but the 2 is magic. And by the way the Taiwan craftsmanship is perfect worth every penny.
