Sage 5 - what is it rumored to be?

Now that the 4 is ready for pre-order, surely someone out there (even if it has to be Sal :D ) knows what maker the Sage 5 is going to pay tribute to, so let's hear it!

Sounds like a winner and I'd personally like to see some canvas "worn" Micarta for scales. Man o man an open through design with some scales like below and I'm on board.

I'm just thinking out loud here but I could see the Sage 5 maybe being like a tribute to Mick Strider or Duane D. ( I know these two aren't the most ethical guys in the world but they sure as heck produced some nifty folders ) and looking like a scaled down Strider folder of some sort in of course S30V and making use of a Frame lock.

Nice idea but the Sage 2 already deployed the frame lock so not likley..

I'll second this thought, it sure would look great.

I agree with the compression lock with G10 or micarta. I know Sal is probably reluctant to pay tribute to himself or Eric but I really thin it would be a fantastic seller.

After Framelock the Compression lock would be my choice of best lock...

I know everyone thinks that there isn't enough room in the Sage series for an Axis-Lock, but my mini-bone collector disagrees (its even got the Spydie Hole already :O ).

Really, what else is there to pay tribute to in the knife world that isn't already represented in the previous Sage models?

Axis Lock
Tri-Ad Lock
Arc Lock
Ball-bearing Lock (didn't Spyderco have something to do with this design anyways?)
Compression Lock
Friction Lock
Slip Joint
Flipper
Assisted / Auto (unlikely)

Maybe some different scale-materials or something...?

I'm actually very curious now.

Who would receive credit for that?

McHenry and Williams?

Something tells me that Benchmade wouldn't let this fly if they could help it.

Or they would give the ok and then try to sue Spyderco haha.

But they use the Spyderco hole....

Hmmmmm...

Plus it's too similar to the bolt action lock used in the Sage 3 IMO...

BTW, I do recognize the similarities in liner locks and frame locks (before I get tore up for making that statement haha)..

What about the Paul W. Poehlmann Axial lock??

A Sage with silver twill G10, bolster and the Axial lock would be pretty cool.

Locks currently under patent to other knife companies are unlikely. The rights would probably be unobtainable, or prohibitively expensive. Compression lock is certainly possible and I'm fairly sure the patents have expired on the Paul Axial Lock, Wm Henry Button Lock, and Crawford lock. There's also the "stud lock" used on many Italian switchblades, and the older backspring style liner lock, but since one of the points of the Sage series is homage to lock designers, not sure if either of those would be a candidate.

Button Lock! I love the one on the Hogue EX-01. Gerber's isn't bad either on their 06 US line.

Compression lock would be my first choice though.

Axis lock would be nice, but will never happen.

im with the compression lock, but i would love to see them use Flavio Ikomas designs. Maybe make a sage 2 design with some blue anodized holes making it purty of course and put ikbs in it. That would be freaking sweet. oh and put a nifty flipper on it.

The compression lock would sell like crazy. Stick some orange G-10 on it? yes please.
That being said, I would love a button lock too, something nice and classy.

We've already done a poll - the Compression lock came out on top, but I'm genuinely hoping Sal will chime in with some hints as to what they're considering next...
