Saint George goes to Las Vegas

Threads like this are really productive. Not only are we exposed to an outstanding knife but the alternative views can lead to some very interesting and educational discussionn. Some very good information was shared here on lamination and steel characteristics for example.

I like the knife. I think that the engraving is exceptional and the knife looks like it is well built. I don't have a problem with the san mai transition of the Damascus to the core as it seems reasonable enough. There are some who like Damascus/san mai well organized and some who like it more organic. This just happens to be more on the organic side. Maybe it is the contrast of having an organic blade next to a well organized pattern on the handle that is not working for some.

If I had to critique the san mai I would have to look at the other side and see how well it balanced with the side in the picture. So I would love to see a picture of the other side of the blade. Then I could give a better opinion. There is the one spot in the san mai that the Damascus drops down a little too far into the core line and for some reason - at least for me- my eye keeps coming back to that spot so it is a little distracting. Overall I would love to have the knife in my collection but if I had to give any critique of the knife it seems that the san mai does take a little attention away from the engraving and the overall knife design. I would have went with either a plain blade or a 'plainer' more organized Damascus pattern- that way the engraving and the knife would be the focus.

I agree. I was unaware that the materials laminated to form the blade were a feat in itself. I had heard of stellite, but didn't know anything about it.
