I'm planning a camping trip in early march will be gone for several days...my tool selection will be a vitorinox rucksack and a fiskars 14 inch hatchet...I'm of the mind lately, that that will handle pretty much anything..(of course they'll be back-up in my bag but it won't get used unless absolutely nec...

Thats a good set up. That's all you'll need. Good choices. I'm taking a Fiskars 14" hatchet and a Case Sod Buster on my next outing. Just go practical.

I've always loved my Fiskars with a Mora 510 and/or a Farmer. Hard to find things that this combo won't do. Lately I've really enjoyed my KaBar heavy bowie, however, and I'm going to trade the Fiskars out for the bowie + Fiskars collapsible saw.

Too many choices!!!

My Grandad carried nothing but a two blade folder, and a axe, or hatchet. I never remember him with anything else until the Buck 110 came out. He liked that knife.

Not that I feel the need to emulate my Grandad's chouices, but it obviously worked for him.

On overnight fly fishing trips I often take nothing more than a hatchet, and my Vic Farmer.

My last camping trip I carried Fiskars hatchet, Mora (which I didn't use that much), and a Camper model SAK. I used the hatchet and SAK when I was younger. I never felt that I needed any more than that.

Hey Riley- Am I thinking of someone else, or did you recently pick up a KaBar Heavy Bowie too? Would be interested in how your (similar) tools compared...

I like that setup. I personally would want a fixed blade on my belt as well, just for the convenience, but that's just me. A one hand opening folder would do the trick for me too.

Since 2000 when I took my cross country motorcycle trip, I've traveled pretty light. A pocket knife and a 12 inch Ontario was all I carried with me for cutlery. It did just fine on the trip, camping out for 3 1/2 weeks on the road between Maryland and the Oregon coast. The folder handled most of what I had to do. Never needed the chopper, it was along for the just in case thing. A hatchet would do just as well. Camping terrain varried from plains, to Rocky mountains, to Pacific coast pine forest.

The trip tought me that we just carry too much gear. I had stuff along that I never had need for, and the saddle bags on the sportster were not that big.

JK I was hoping you'd chime in...always good to hear form you... Spooky I did recently pick up a kabar bowie..I like it..the fiskars outchops it though....and it creates less of a blip on the social radar....that being said thier are some finer tasks I can do with a large knife that I'll need some practice doing with an axe...

Sounds like a good pair of tools. Good luck on the trip and keep us updated and don't forget the pics.

You guys know that I am a fixed blade guy...so I hate to admit this, but I carried a SAK and an AirForce survival knife as a kid, and never had a problem, we usually brought a full size axe that was for everyone to chop firewood with. I still have the SAK...I loved that McGuyver man.

A few weeks on the AT did that for me..after 1 week, I stopped in a town and shipped a bunch of stuff home...my pack never went over 20lbs. again.

I'd be really interested in hearing what you started with, what went home, and what you decided to keep!

Gene,
I never knew you did the AT! Did you thru-hike, or just section? What year(s)? Man, we gotta talk!

Ive actually found that the 12" ontario and a mora and a SAK gets the job done pretty well. I use to carry a few other things like a ka-bar usmc and a fiskars hatchet. But the 12" machete chops what ever i need it to and the mora does all the fine work quite well. The SAK is usually a back up knife.

Man Riley, you change your knife combos like changing underwear! Is there any knife that does not suit you;) What is the difference with the rucksack and one handed trekker? Let us know how that ruck works out! Keep on keeping on brother!

Yeah SAK and hatchet sounds like a great combo, I have been looking into getting one of those Fiskars, now I just have a $9 Coleman hatchet

Yeah that is a common story. Neals gap is where most people ship home a lot of their stuff. The ones who dont just leave it behind. The hiker box at Neals gap would be a great place to go if you wanted a bunch of free gear that hikers left behind because it was too heavy.

you're all set with both of those riley... not much you can't do with that combo....
