I like the red nylon handles best. They have a bit of texture to them and wear better without showing scratches as quickly as cellidor. Generally offered on the introductory models, so they are also less expensive (at least they were last time I purchased a couple some years back).

... The modern hollow cellidor is a joke, and until Victorinox changes to something more durable, I will be boycotting the stuff. ...In an age of zytel, nylon, and other tougher polymers, using cellidor is a joke.

From the above, it sounds as though the cellidor changed at some point from solid to hollow. If so, does anyone know when that change occurred?

Only voted Cellidor because it's all I own, but I want to pick up an Alox eventually.

Another option is no scales, as in the "Colin Fletcher" Classic on my key ring with the nail file cut off.

Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate them. From most everyones opinions it kind of reinforced what gave me pause before going ahead with the idea I had.

I only own one SAK it's an Alox Farmer and I was using it the other day and just had a thought ... then looking at several models realised that some of the features I hear mentioned here most weren't offered on Alox models ... so I wanted to see if I got the same input asking directly as my perceptions ... it seems to hold true.

I may just have to think a lil more about it or maybe come up with another idea to go forward.

Again thanks to everyone that replied JJ

I much prefer the look and feel of Alox, but I do often need tweezers, scissors, or even pen. I always carry a celidor Minichamp that provides those tools, along with some kind of Alox model.

Cellidor all the way !

Alox may look nice, and I may often have a classic with me, but that's mostly for the scissors that my recruit and tinker don't have.
Alox cost more, doesn't give you any back tools, doesn't have the toothpick & tweezers & pin , and lastly I have ZERO problems with my cellidor models or the strength of their scales.

If they made an alox recruit I might check it out just to see if I'd like alox for more than just looks, but in general I have no real need for something that cost a good bit more and offers me no advantages.

I've only ever had the Cellidor.
I don't think I've ever seen an Alox in the flesh, to be honest.
I mist admit I am a fan of the Toothpick and Tweezers.
I'm saving my quarters, dimes, nickles, and pennies for a set of Swiss Bianco* Copper scales for my Huntsman. They are toothpick, tweezer, needle, and pen compatable.
Not sure where I'll find a genuine Victorinox needle and pen for them, though.

*They have their own manufacturers subforum here, so I presume I can mention them by name.

You can buy replacement pens or tweezers toothpicks direct from Victorinox or on ebay or Amazon ... should be able to get any of those easily.

Alox for me. I have tried the plastic handles and I don't like them.

If it is not Alox or a Ti mod then I don't own one. BTW my black Alox Pioneer is with me 100% of the time and more than any other knife I own.

I don't know exactly when, but it must have been more than twenty years ago since I have some from the 1990s with hollow scales. For the record, I've had more than twice as many of the old solid scales break as I have the newer hollow scales. That could be just due to age, but it is my personal experience with them.

Alox is my go to for SAKs, second is my walnut spartan, then nylon. Last is cellidor, although I am a sucker for white cellidor.

A buddy of mine was surprised to get the textured red Nylon on his new SAK. I'd never need it either, but I agree. It's leaps and bounds better than the cel handle material.

Thanks, that's good to know.

I'm surprised about your experience with the old solid scales but as you say that may just be due to age. Plastic does tend to get brittle with age.
