I prefer Cellidor covers on my SAKs. I like that the overall knife is very light in weight with those scales, and find that the toothpick and tweezers come in handy quite often.

I've never had the plastic handles on my SAKs break, and I've dropped them from the tops of tall ladders (I can be clumsy, at times). I imagine that it all depends on what part of the knife impacts the ground, and how hard the surface is that it impacts whether or not it breaks.

I've found that I'll dent or bend a liner before the plastic is broken.

and a Scientist with aftermarket copper scales as well
Always wanted the elusive White Scientist how do you like the copper clad one?

I like them both but I always have an Alox Farmer on had, than again I always have a Red Classic on every set of keys I have so it's both for me.

I knew that many that carried a SAK carried whichever model for what tools it had but it surprised me how many list the toothpick and tweezers as main reasons the pick the model they carry.

And makes me wonder why they haven't offered a model with those and Alox or Nylon or a stronger handle material.

But it really confirmed what I was thinking last week and reading old posts ... thanks for all the replies.

Anyone ever think about the fact that if your cellidor scales do break you have an opportunity to replace them with a new color ? Plus you can mix and match colors if you want.

Btw did anyone see the new ( I've never seen them before ) Smokey the Bear tinkers, I think they're awesome but I've already got a tinker and doubt just these scales are available.

If only the Vic logo on nylon scales doesn't fade so easily, I'd warm up on nylon scales. As such, I avoid it as much as I can.

View attachment 767431 As I have posted elsewhere, I am not crazy about the toothpick and tweezers on the SAK. The jaws of the tweezers are square instead of pointed, and they do not offer very much gripping power. Try plucking a hair out of your chin (or anywhere else). The toothpick is kind of short and fat (much like myself).
I like Uncle Bill's Sliver Grippers. They have a precise point, and the gripping force is excellent for a pair of tweezers that size. The T-PIK Stringless Dental Flosser/Rocky Mountain Toothpick/T-4 Products has a long curved stainless pick, which because of the fine tapered wire can get into hard to reach areas. It can remove stuck food by pushing and/or pulling. I use both of these tools frequently. I have similar "bench" tools that work even better, but they do not carry well.

I am only choosing Alox, because it is really tuff. I'll admit, I like the other versions better, because of their tools, but the Alox inspires confidence. I use one every single day at the house, without reserve. I just don't think the cellidor would ever take the abuse I give a 'house knife.'

I like it although I probably shouldn't, the copper scales add a lot of weight. But the texture offers good traction, and they look nice with a little patina. I didn't have the patience to hunt down a white Scientist, so I made my own. If you don't mind it being homemade and less than pristine, e-mail me a shipping address and I'll send it to you. I can always make another.

That would be great Jack, here's my email or just leave yours in my profile page.

Thanks again. :)

I have never bought a SAK based on the scale material. I buy them for the tools they have. I consider the tools in the tinker to be the bare minimum acceptable. My daily carry is a Swiss champ. I would like a more durable scale than the celluloid, but I am unwilling to sacrifice a favorite tool to get it. So all my SAKs have celluloid scales.

nylon handles are way better than celidor,do not show scratches and are way stronger.I have few saks with nylon handles and they look almost like brand new after few years of use.Celidor looks nice when brand new ,and its ok if you do not use your knife.Alox handles are very good too.Victorinox should offer some choices in micarta or something smilar,it would be awesome.ps.My Spartan and alpineer have nylon handles and they have seen a ton of use,and handles look almost brand new.I have recruit with celidor scales and even though it was just my keychain knife it has ton of scratches.

I must say that when travelling, the globally-recognized red handle and white cross of the SAK plastic scales not only is inoffensive to others, it inspires confidence and reassures me that I have most of my preparedness needs covered. And the red is harder to misplace. For my next overseas trip I'll be swapping out the olive scales on my GAK/Trekker for the traditional SAK red (and add toothpick and tweezers in the bargain).

[Question: There are blue Star of David SAKs--I have a Tinker model in this livery--but did Victorinox or Wenger ever come up with a crescent imprint to appeal to the market in Muslim nations? Sort of the way Montblanc was said to have sold pens without the snowcap imprint, ostensibly because it looked too much like a Star of David.]
