SAK or Multi Tool?

I've often struggled with this, but I've come to the conclusion that mulit-tools are generally very good for urban carry and my SAK Outrider will join me on outdoors/rural adventures. As much as I think that, I often carry both a multi-tool AND a SAK; redundancy is my excuse:D Anyways, I was taking a few pictures today and thought I'd share:

I much prefer the locking-blade SAKs, however I still like the Huntsman and the Alox Farmer and Electrician

Some multi-tool shots:

I have worn the Leatherman Charge for several years now on duty; I like the Swiss Tool X model, but it's a monster. The original Wave is still one of my favorites, but the newly aquired Swiss Spirit is gaining ground.

pictures are great. you could carry a different multi-tool or sak ever day for more than a month! personally i prefer a pliar-based multi tool as long as i also have a folding knife or a fixed blade on my person. but if i didnt have any other knives with me, an sak would be preferable.

That's a good point. My favourite multi tool, the Spirit, doesn't have much in the way of a blade - a combi blade with just a small straight edge section, close to the handle. That's not a consideration normally, though, because I also EDC a Buck Alpha Dorado and a Benchmade AFCK. If I didn't EDC the 2 aforementioned, then I would prefer a Vic SAK - the Ranger or the Champ.

I like my OHT, but a pair of pliers can be very useful, even in the wilderness. So I agree with carrying one of each, just in case.

Have you got much use out of the locking pliers tools?

Kershaw's design is nice...plus it has the needle nose profile, but the one I've used the most is the Leatherman Crunch...mostly where you need a decent vice grip like a hose clamp or other pipe fitting. The two I usually travel with outside of work are the Swiss X-Tool (soon to be the Spirit) and the Crunch.

I edc the Swisstool and a Spartan, I should do away with carrying the Spartan, but never have.

i get a ton of use out of mine. the day i first got it, me and some others were doing alot of small improving on a house. i opened paint cans with it, used the screw-driver counless times, gave the scissors to my ocd brother so he could cut some stray threads off of his clothing, filed a broken nail to a useable point and use the pliars to make knots tighter than i would normally be able to with just my hands. btw, mine is a leatherman blast.

I edc a Spirit most days and take it to the woods as well. A lot of my camping is done while motorcycle traveling, and I like having the mechanical capablilities of the multitool to augment the bike's tool kit.

Even if hiking or backpacking, I think a multitool is a good choice for the woods because of all the man-made material that you find around that could be used (wire fencing, etc.).

That's a good point. Pliers always seem to come in handy whether you're messing with fence wire or removing a hot pot from the fire.

I EDC a Sog Powerlock and would be completely lost without it. I can't count the things I use it for.

As soon as Gerber gives it back, I wil be carrying the Diesel again. I carry it around daily, but have found no use for it in the bush that my SAK couldn't handle...

Sir,

I usually carry both a Swiss Army knife and a Leatherman, While deployed to Afghanistan, I carried a Leatherman Core, Vic Outrider, and a Spyderco Military. the reason is the damn little scissors keep getting used for something, So I have since came to the conclusion that I want scissors on my Multi tool, I had a charge and later a Surge, just don't like certain things about them, So I have decided to get A Vic Swiss Tool X, and by the way thanks for that great close up pic of yours. After I get one and if it works out, on most outings will only carry that tool.

Again good thread!

I've come to the same conclusion...I like the scissors, they come in more handy than the knife blade. Leatherman's scissors are just too small. The Fiskars ones in the Gerber are actually quite nice, but I don't care for Gerber. Victorinox scissors just plain work for me; also check out the Wenger (EVO-18 model) scissors which are also quite nice.

Actually, the best Wenger/Swiss scissors I ever had were on my old SwissCard. They are a little bigger and worked great. The newer card that I carry after destroying the previous piece of plastic junk doesn't have them. Actually, when I figure in size and everything, my Midnight Manager is probably the most useful Swiss for my daily chores. Pen, red LED, scissors, phillips and blade.
