SAK or MULTITOOL

I hear a lot of people praising SAKs on this forum, and I also really like them. However, I gave mine up a few years ago when I started carrying a multitool so, my question is who prefers a SAK and who prefers a MULTITOOL and why.

I personally prefer the multitool because, for me, it serves more purposes. I can just plain do more with it than a SAK.

So what do you all prefer?
David

Edit: I would also like to know which multitool you prefer and why.

Personally, I like the Gerber multitool that the pliers slide out of the handle instead of "flipping" out. I have found this tool gives me a more comfortable grip.

I prefer both working together....SAK "Hiker & LM Wave" w/BRK&T Mini Canadian :D

SAK Farmer always in the front pocket for EDC.
Victorinox and Leatherman multi-tools in the car and truck.

I have one of each, but seem to EDC the multi-tool a lot more often because, well, like you said, it does more things. Though I have to admit that the SAK is more aesthetically pleasing.

I edc (pocket-carry) a Leatherman XE6 and carry a Stayglow Vic Classic on my keychain.
So i guess i do both.
But i've carried a Vic Swisschamp and a Vic Huntsman fairly extensively as well.
I just seem to vacillate between SAKs and Multi-tools every year or so, lol.
This morning i was pawing my SAK collection and it has rekindled my SAK lust.
:D

SAK for pockets
Multitool for backpack

+1:thumbup:. I pocket carry my farmer (edc) or rucksack (woods), and carry my leatherman wave in the backpack. I also have a Vic Classic on the keychain. The tools on Wave don't get used enough to justify the weight in pocket/belt carry, but I like having it with me in my edc backpack or hiking backpack. Might replace the Wave with a Vic Spirit soon.

I had a LM Surge, Squirt, Kick? All were missing tools IMHO. I have had the Wave and SOG Powerlock, but have kept the Wave II. Scissors are too small for me, but then again, I have a couple of blades. That is too big to tote around, so I leave that in the truck/Max bag. I usually carry a SAK Huntsman with any locking folders I might have (Ritter mini and fullsize Grip).

Can I vote both?

LM Wave on my belt and a good SAK in my pocket to cover the bases.

I like the options the Wave brings to the table (I carry it at work too), but it was drilled into me as a kid that you don't whittle with a lock blade (I was told it would damage it, I'm sure that's not accurate, but what do you want, it's what I was taught :D). Plus I just prefer a SAK or SAK style for things like that.

i have used both and have not found a lot of difference between them, sometimes it is good to have the pliers with you. but my OHT has done fine also, the saw on the larger saks is a little longer than the multitool.

i tend to carry the mutitool a leatherman supertool around when working if i am just in the woods then i carry the sak, when hunting i carry the leatherman.

i could be happy with either. so pick one and you will be happy.

I wouldn't go as far as a SAK for the outdoors and a multitool for urban, but I do feel that SAKs are better for soft materials and multitools for hard. If I had to do a bunch of mechanical type stuff in the sticks; perhaps hacksaw through plastic and glass stuff, drive screws and bolts, kinda engineering type making and mending, then perhaps I'd rethink the multitool. As it is I'd have to go on a flight of fancy to seriously consider that – perhaps on a snowmobile dragging a pulk full of firearms, lanterns, stoves, generators, radios and whatnot. As it stands, pretty much everything I want to work except bone is soft so the SAK wins. Proper, dedicated, insulated, comfortable conventional pliers are in my gear constantly anyway.

I always carry both. Vic Cybertool Lite + Gerber Crux. I would like to upgrade the MT but the Gerber is good enough for now.

That's something I've been considering adding to my gear to replace the wave, instead of carrying the wave AND farmer or rucksack around.

SAK in the woods (plus my other knives), Multitool in the city,

Plain and simple, thats how I role.

Vic camper or similar for woods loafing, I do take a small 400 series gerber in the pack while in the woods, but in the city I have a kick, wave and the gerber with me, not on me but the Gerber is with me, two leathermans are stuck in the car.

I prefer multi tools, because I find that the tools in there seem to be more robust and better designed for heavier use (SAK tools themselves are fine, It's more the way they are fitted into the frame)

I currently use a leatherman core, usualy carried in it's leather belt pouch

I favor a multitool because, as you say, it does more; all that a SAK does, plus pliers/wire cutters. I take a multitool in the woods too because it opens up the possibility of harvesting abandoned man-made materials that are increasingly all over the place.

The big advantage of a SAK is compactness for pocket carry.
