SAKs, Leathermans vs. Single blade folder (like a Spyderco)

I mainly use my SAK (Huntsman) for the sissors, bottle/can openers and the screwdrivers. Then one single blade clipped or in the pocket for cutting chores. The SAK can do all I need, but I have grown fond of this SAK and one blade combination and it is my EDC combo 95% of the time.

The eternal irony of SAKs and multi-tools is that the more useful they are, the less useful they are. Meaning that the more tools they have, the bulkier and more unwieldy they become, and the less likely you are to carry it.
...

^This^

I love my multitools and SAK's, I keep one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, one in my tool box, one in my desk, one in my truck..... but I hardly ever cary one on me.

To me they are just too bulky, no clip so they end up sideways at the bottom of my pocket (which I hate), most SAKs can't be opened one handed, and do not have locking blades.

So while they are usefull, I am much more likely to cary something like my Spyderco. And I happen to think my Military is as good a slicer as my SAK. :)

I don't go anywhere without some sort of multi-tool on me. A few years ago I was rotating a multi-tool in and out of my edc load and realized that of all the knives I carried and picked from the sak or Leatherman type tool was the most useful. Not only was it the better choice from a what if angle but that if I had a multi on me I often used it. Somedays when I did not carry one,I really missed it.
So now I carry a sak and or a Leatherman everyday. Usually I have another knife on me but not always.

I think an SAK (Pick one) would handle about 95% of what most people would need a knife for 99% of the time.

I also wish they used a better steel.

I always keep a few SAK's around.

What makes you believe the steel is not good? I have never heard of it rusting, pitting or not keeping an edge. You can get them as sharp as a razor and they have a lifetime guarantee!

I never said it wasn't good. ;)

There are better steels though, an SAK in a better steel would be the ticket IMO.

I've always loved Swiss Army knives, but I've never been a fan of the huge multi-stack configurations. For me, something like the Tinker is pocket perfection (I also like to have a small SAK on my keychain) and I'd rather carry a SAK than a multi-tool. I'd have to agree with the others who toss their multi-tools in a backpack or bag (read: man-purse) instead of a pocket.

Wouldn't it be something if Victorinox had a line of premium designer knives with different steels and scale materials? Custom tool configurations? I'd be in!

I think it would be interesting really.

But I doubt that would happen because of the success of what they have been doing forever.

I am not a big Multi-tool (the pliers type) user. I find them clumsy for cutting and would only use one if I had nothing else, and I mean nothing else, available to me. I carry a SAK daily. I have added a CRKT Razel Stubby as a regular carry knife. I like the Spyderco blades and have several Enduras, and a couple others. But the SAK gets used because it is always in my pocket. I find the tweezers to be real handy when doing stuff outdoors. I keep a SOG multi-tool in my work bag for times when I might need it. I also keep an Endura there.

I usually have a multitool in my edc bag bit find it too bulky to carry around. I like SAKs as well but just tend to use a blade more often so I usually stick to my single blade knives.

I edc a Vic Huntsman(leather belt sheath),or a Stay Glow Climber(nylon belt sheath)most every day.I also carry another Folder in my right front jeans pocket,it varies as to type.Unless I'm woods bumming,in which I'll pack a large fixed blade, that combination stays the same anymore.I don't seem to use my big one hand folders anymore.Everyone ages differently, maybe it's just me.The SAK and a slipjoint does it for me plus 99% of the time.Though,I admit to having a Spyderco Rescue tucked away in a vest or jacket pocket most of the time, just in case.

I carry a small fixed blade, generally neck carried, and a Leatherman Freestyle every day. Honestly, I could probably get by with just the Freestyle, it's got a pretty fast deployment speed and the pliers and blade pretty much cover anything I need to do most days. I still find myself carrying the small fixed blade though, maybe because of the security inherent to fixed blades or maybe because I just like it.

I carried an SAK Tinker as an EDC for years and never felt I was under knifed.

I've been EDCing a SAK off and on since the early 80s. For the last few years though it's been the following:
On me: Vic Midnite MiniChamp on keychain, folder in pocket (Caly3, ZT0350, Ladybug, Dragonfly).
In my BOB: Vic Huntsman, Leatherman Wave.
More recently I've also been carrying an Izula in my BOB and occasionally a Leatherman Squirt P4.

I have to go with the SAK as being the most useful. I edc one for years. It is 0.8" wide and I've used every tool on it. Before I got the Victorinox I had a Case small whittler then a Buck 110. I could open the 110 with a flick of my thumb but over the years that I carried it wasn't ever needed. I used a Sharade medium stockman before I got my SAK which I edc for 20+ years. I used a Buck/Wegner SAK for a few years and now I am back to edc my Sharade. I have 2 Leatherman multitools and the tools are a little time consuming to deploy. If I could only have one it would be the Victorinox.

Gotta agree with Bo T. I am never without a Vic Tinker. My second knife is either a Case or Schrade Stockmen. I have large and medium so which I carry depends on whether I'm working or off. I also have several large single blade pocker clip "tactical" folders that I quit carrying cause they were just extra weight.

Which Bucks? I have a couple 110's that are 15+ years old. They're kinda heavy, even compared to a Wave. Are some
of the smaller lighter Bucks ones that you have? I've often considered some of them...

My Bucks are a 110, Vantage large, Vantage small, and a little lock back model, the name escapes me (Bucklite?) The one that gets most pocket time is the small Vantage. It's just the right size for EDC, disappears in my pocket and good for just about anything that needs cut. The others I use for outdoor stuff, work, or as boonie companions. The 110 is great for sustained cutting, like 5 hours opening bales of blown insulation. The little one is in my bathrobe pocket and is for use around the house before breakfast, cutting pills, toast, newspaper articles, coupons, whatnot.

Vic steel is not as "high quality". Then again, most SAKs don't cost $80. So you can abuse the hell out of them for years, then when/if they break, you can go to the local hardware store because EVERY single one seems to carry them, and then replace it for $15 to $30.

I agree that actually SAK's can handle almost any task in EDC. I never liked thick ones, to me the Tinker has the perfect size and tools. I don't care about the clip since I prefer deep pocket carry.
I never understood the use of Swisschamps and similar, apart from leaving it in a vehicle/bag...and there I prefer to have a Leatherman for the pliers.
I could go larger to have a locking one hand opening bladed SAK but I rarely do that. Instead, depending on where I am going, I might add a folder.
I rarely choose to go without the SAK tho...
