Even after registration!

It's frustrating enough to have to use an old non-gmail email address I only even keep around for situations like your forum (which is very rare these days honestly), but it's even worse that once I've registered from that old email address, proving I'm legit, I cannot then change my account info to my gmail address (it says banned).

I'm almost positive there's a way you can set your forum up so that while people can't register with certain email domains, they can at least change to them later if they so desire once they're a registered member.

Most forums today though, simply use an image verification system to ensure bots aren't able to create accounts via free email domains (image verification being where a string of letters are shown on an image which bots clearly can't 'read' and the user is prompted to enter them into a text box before they can register.)

Thanks for reading this.

I'm not Sal, but I'm pretty sure that this was done to stop spammers, since gmail addresses are free. If you want, I think there's an admin who can change your email address for you. Just PM one of them and they should be able to help.

I'm the person who changed the forum rules to not allow free email addresses and yes, it was done to stop spammers. Unfortunately, Image Verification is not enough either.

If you'd like to change your email address, just PM me with the address you would like to have, your user name on our site and I'll take care of it.

As for the programming to allow a current member to change their email address to a free address... unfortunately, that's not an option.

Hmmm. . . I have never used anything except free email accounts, so I guess that is one more forum to not bother visiting.

I've always had an e-mail account from my service provider. They said I didn't get a discount for not using it, so why not use it? I get enough spam in my e-mail without getting it on the forums, too.

It is called Captcha

I have the same problem. First I tried a Hotmail account, and than a Gmail account that someone gave me especially for the Spyderco forum. Doesn't work:(
Now I only read the forum, can't post anything:rolleyes:

This is prbably off topic, but why don't people just use real email accounts and be done with it?

Interesting. I registered ages ago on Spyderco fourms using my gmail address. Does it still work for me or do I just not get any email notifications or ??.

Personally, I use Gmail because I can always get into it wherever I go and it has some pretty useful tools to help me keep all my messages organized. Also, I don't have to worry about losing my old emails if I have a computer crash. Just my $0.02.

Pretty sure you are "grandfathered" in.

The forums kept getting hit by spammers. Since the change, the spamming has dropped pretty much to zero. Less work for the moderators, but less fun for us who enjoy spamming ridicule upon the spammers. :D

I use gmail because I get zero spam, and I also don't lose my email account if I switch providers. The Email offered by my provider completely sucks in comparison.

Maybe it is better that I don't sign up at other forums, as I spend plenty of time on the several I currently frequent. :D

DaveH, to answer your question, some of us don't use POP3 accounts because web-based accounts are much easier. Gmail has 2GB+ of storage, a very good Spam filter, a great interface, and awesome search functionality. I can access it from anywhere, and it doesn't have the semi-porn sound that I always thought "Hotmail" had. If I switch service providers, I don't have to change my email address, and when I upgrade my computer, I don't have to worry about backing up my email and making sure it makes it into the new machine.

:)
