Sale Over, Thanks Everyone - Burl Source - 2 Day Sale Thread

We are almost 200 miles from there.
SW corner of Oregon about 1/2 hour south of Grants Pass

Well I've been checking out your site for a few minutes now and I'm also liking some of your black palm wood. Do you have a retail store or do you let people come look at what you have in person?? Also is the black & white ebony something you get in regularly or is that a rarity because I don't see it listed anywhere on your site? This is the picture that has me really wanting to try and make my own black and white ebony knife but using a knife blank from Alabama Damascus.

Our place here is primarily a couple galleries with furniture and carvings we make with burl. There is also the woodyard with burl slabs, whole burls and a lot of different figured woods. My work area is a separate building at the edge of the property where I have my workshop and office. A number of the other forum members have come out to see the place.

I don't normally carry the black and white ebony. I just bought this as a fluke. Had it shipped with some other woods I imported from Laos.

Summertime is kind of fun here. You get to see a lot of the workers making furniture and stuff. The grounds cover about 4 or 5 acres with the galleries (looks like buildings from Lord of the Rings), several tree houses and unusual stuff all over. A little over a year ago Subaru filmed one of their commercials here.

I'll be down this summer for sure what would you say is the best time to come? Like all the cool stuff is going on but you'd still have some time to bs for a few minutes??

Weekdays the workers are usually here. The boss lets them work their own schedules. I am here most days after 10am. Sometimes earlier but 10am gives time for the coffee to kick in.

=================================

Stabilized California Buckeye Burl. These pieces are not recommended for less experienced knife makers. Buckeye burl will have bark pockets and open eyes that will require fills unless used on rustic projects where you want them left open. Some makers will fill the voids with a mixture of epoxy and dark wood sawdust. It is difficult to see in the photos so plan about ½ of the eyes you see in the photos to be open creating small voids.
#B4 Sale Price $20 - 5&3/4” x 2” x 1&1/8”
#B6 Sale Price $35 - 7&3/4” x 1&7/8” x 1&1/8”
Stabilized Spalted Maple Burl. The spalting gives these pieces dramatic contrasting colors along with burl figure from edge to edge. With spalted burl there may be some small voids that could require a minor fill if they do not trim away when you are shaping your handle.
#SM12 Sale Price $35 SOLD to RRock- 5&1/2” x 2&3/8” x 1&1/4”

Stabilized Spalted Curly Maple. In my opinion one of the best deals in this sale. These normally sell for $30 each. Cool spalted colors and real good curly figure that is difficult to see very well in the photos. Will stand out much more when you fine sand and finish these blocks.

Mark.I have a question that might interest some of the other buyers. In the case of the maple burl for instance, can this wood be dyed once it has been stabilized or does that have to be done before or during stabilization?

I'll take E7 and payment is already sent. I don't know if I want it into scales or not because this will be my first ever attempt at making a knife handle. This just consists of cutting the block into 2 pieces right??? If so I'm not worried about it because I have access to pretty much every woodworking tool known to man haha.

The dying is normally done prior to stabilizing. I have seen examples where someone has shaped and done final sanding on their handle and then finally dyed or stained the stabilized wood. I would think it would need a topcoat over that to keep the pigmentation from wearing away. Just a guess here.

As far as cutting scales,
I use a bandsaw to split the block into 2 matching slabs. When you separate the 2 pieces by opening like a book you have 2 mirror image surfaces for the faces of the handle.

I'd love to take M11 off your hands. I am sending you an email with an atypical request regarding scales.
