Sam Lurquin Furious Maximus For Blade

Appears to be very well crafted

Will people still find the design appealing in 5-10 years?

The fuller and blade shape are not that appealing to me. I appear to be alone in that opinion

That's a rather odd comment........ Some will some....will not

People have been attracted to fullers for 100's of years so I do not see them going out of style anytime soon

Being that Sams work is in such high demand I only see it going up in value and desirability

But what do I know :)!

Nothing wrong with giving your opinion but from a maker's perspective, it would be nice if you also explained a little why you don't like it. Changes a simple negative observation into constructive criticism we can use.

Like the fuller for example. If I were to nitpick, I would have liked to see a little curve to it to make it blend a bit more with blade profile.

I think people do get a bit prickly when things they really like get criticized...or simply not adulated here. This is a general comment and not aimed at any one comment or commenter here.

Hence, I tend not to comment at all when the maker post things themselves . Most of the time it is not the maker , but their fans that do not like non-positive comments. Things tend not to be constructive after that.

However, when a dealer posts a knife, especially someone as comfortable in his opinions and tastes as Mr Paranee, I may rarely venture forth my own opinion.

There are some trends in recent knife making I do not particularly like. One is the super blocky tactical knives that draw inexplicable high prices and the other is overly complex straight knives. The blade shape of this knife is not my particular taste. I have only one knife in my own collection in a similar style. It is well executed by this maker though and appears to be one of his signature designs. His grinding and finishing skills appear superb. I do not like fullers at all as they serve no useful purpose and they tend to distract from, rather than enhance the underlying design. When you combine a complex damascus pattern, checkering, with the fuller/knife shape combination it comes off too busy to me. Maybe even trendy. The quality of the photos may be playing a role in my visual impression. I like the knife handle shape a lot though.

So my question was and is...will a knife of such a particular style remain in vogue or popular in the future?

I don't think the blocky tactical knife will be. There may be someone here who agrees with that

The best news is we can all have our own opinions and post/buy/sell as we see fit.

Opinion and fact are two different things. Perhaps you need to inform yourself about why blades are fullered. Indulge yourself in Wikipedia and you will find that more than one useful purpose is fulfilled with the use of a fuller.

Spoken like someone that had no experience or knowledge of performance crafted blades

First if you were referring to me as in the fan comment I resent it

I am not a fan of anything

I am a patron and a customer

Secondly this knife is not mine

Sam will be selling it at Blade

Next everyone on here knows I am not a dealer in the sense you are claiming

I do not sell knives as a dealer would

I work in conjunction with high level makers to facilitate people getting knives they would not have access to

If anything I'm a broker

I pay for the dealer membership because it is the highest price form of sponsorship I can do here and I believe in supporting this place

Most importantly many myself included are on a quest for true high performance steel

A fuller is useless ?

Do you know what it is for ?

It is to lighten and balance the blade among many things

It is function over form ..... Not the other way around

Your a negative poster

That is off base .....imho

Lastly you state that I'm confident in my opinion

Sams knives sell out in minutes ...... My opinion doesn't matter the knife buy9ng world has spoken

I've had the pleasure of handling one of Sam's killer instinct's and i do believe this blade has the same basic handle shape?
Anyhow, it felt GREAT in hand. I really think thats on of Sam's strong suits. If you have the opportunity to handle one of his pieces, you should!

Good stuff; now hopefully i can run fast enough to his table to see it before its gone LOL :D

edit: Actually held a Maximus bowie side by side with the killer instinct, its like he combined the two! i might be speaking the obvious, but it just clicked for me hahahaha :p

I will defer to your expertise on performance blade matters, I was unaware a fuller could make a real and quantifiable difference on non-swords. i will continue to not rely on wikipedia as a reference if I can possibly avoid it, sorry about that.

I doubt many of these blades will see hard use , but hope they bring joy to their owners, irrespective of how they are used or preserved.

I am certain they will sell well. I still think they are kinda ugly with the fuller. I am curious how people will look back at them in 10 years. They could be the next Loveless chute knife for all we know. That would make the owners very happy I'm sure

Things have been a bit quiet from Sam Lurquin. After last year's debacle, I predict he will present, with righteous anger, five tremendous MS pieces. I cannot wait to read the reports and see photos of his offerings!

He already posted one of his MS test knives on FB - just a killer trench knife. Count on Sam to do his own thing - I bet precious few knives of that style have ever been submitted for an MS test.

Joe, great post and wow what a pristine knife Mr. Sam made! awesome attention to detail as is the case with each knife that he makes! Looking so forward to seeing you in a few days, safe travels Bro. Broker, I will have to remember that one, always considered you as just plain good people!!

Thx buddy

I appreciate the kind words

See ya soon :)

Joe,

a bigger question is " Do you know if ALL of Sam's knives made it safely into the US this year?"

Hopefully last year's debacle is just a distant memory

Last I heard they did :)

Last I heard Adam DeRosier saved the day

Apparently the ABS did not have him down to test and thankfully Adam caught the error and corrected it
