It is hard to strike a balance between discipline and enthusiasm. But this whole website is about enthusiasm! Leave the discipline to the mods. We'll watch out for actual violations of the rules.

For the newbies, or oldtimers new to RAT Cutlery, the more the better. A post isn't just information, it's sharing excitement and self-affirmation, being a member of the pack -- The Rat Pack, the Kershaw Mafia, the Sebenzanistas. We're here for the fun, first of all.

Once people feel part of this, they can get into learning, knife use, survival, getting together in the real world. People work better when they feel others know and accept them.

Well I am going to post anymore questions for fear of knocking some other more important question out of the box.

Signing off. Rat Pack 512 Gone.

I'm not trying to quench anyones fire here. Just voicing my own opinion. Only hoping that perhaps some folks could turn the volume down, just a touch so it is easier to hear everyone and not just those stomping LOUD.

Sometimes it's hard to "turn the volume down" when you're as excited about new gear as some people. Shoot, I've started threads about new gear myself just because I wanted to share. If you don't find it interesting, just hit the back button on your browser and continue on.

Lol don't worry abolt, I would hope nobody is pissed, the forum is suppose to be relaxed and enjoyable, if someone is pissed about it they are taking it way too seriously and need to find a hobby or something.

One apparent problem is that all the enthusiasm pushes posts off the first page in a hurry.
Look at the General Knife Discussion -- page after page after page of current day posts.

That's the price of success! :D

True. I'll give you that. My point is and it sounds like you're in agreement is to not "squelch" the so called noobs. I'm still a noob to alot of stuff and I know I like to post about my stuff/gear/situations. If nothing else, I don't have to worry about hijacking someone's thread with my own questions.

I think that is a big problem as well, some people think that just because they know the answer to a question or that since they already got their Rat Pack number no one else matters. Some people think this is an elite club and we don't need anymore people crowding in, there is always room for more. This is the other side to the coin and balance is next to impossible. Besides it would get kind of boring hearing from the same people day after day and running out of topics because they have all been discussed.

I don't disagree with anything here. My point is that the CLUTTER posting is becoming EXTREME and more disruptive than beneficial here. Especially of late. The Izula giveaway is gaining steam perhaps, or more have heard about it? I can't say, but I have noted that extraneous posting has increased, that is the heart of my post.

That is true. But heck, I have already seen a classic melt down/banning as a result......which was entertaining......especially the meltdown email to the owner of the company, and the mod sassing......

I agree that when anything is given away, or a contest held, you get a lot of that.

The recent Busse SantaGanza really brought them out of the wood work. $12,000 or something worth of free giveaway knives and shop credits all at the same time, with no post count or prior participation required........that was mad crazy. They really came out of the woodwork then. Crashed the forum for at least two hours.

I like that. I'd rather see two similar threads than have the original poster feel like he's been pushed aside. Thread drift is OK, especially when it enlarges on the original question. But 'shut up and listen to MY story now' isn't cool. :)

I highly recommend becoming a paid member of bladeforums. It costs little more than the price of a fast food value meal to become a basic member(10 bucks) and I have been using the search feature that becomes available to read posts on just about every question I have ever had. There is no end to the information available.

Amen. I even consider myself a bit of a cheapskate by "only" being a Basic Member. It's 10 friggin' bucks, folks! Don't tell me you can't afford it.

I was under the impression that international members could not be Basic Members ...

*gone looking again ...*

If paying memberships are optional I don't see how it's anyone's business if members choose not to pay for one.

I've learned to readily identify those posts I don't need to, or care to read, maybe you should do the same.

International gold member here, you gotta go through a process of buying your membership on the 1SKS if I remember right. Takes a few days for it to kick in, but it's really worth it.

yea ... this groups never going to get the whole "read the sticky and follow directions" mentality we have proved that ... its annoyed me... you mean you couldnt post the same post in the 99-1000 izula threads? or the picture thread.. you could also post in the any thing goes thread... or the 1000 post give away threads to beef up your rat pack number...

my problem comes from that and general disrespect of general rules of posting and helping people keep there info fresh ..... searching and searching and learning is a thing we are here for....

is it going to change nope , does it matter , meh not really. I dont think any one was calling for a ban i think people were saying LURK moar! and read up and post helpfuly. and get into the flow of things around here. i have voiced this in the offtopic any thing goes cause it doessnt matter and im a grumpier old man.

being a paid member helps too.... opens up a lotta things , and also helps us have a more stable board.... these places dont magicly pop up and this place gets a lotta traffic. it takes money.

I dont mind newbies ... but the same page . come on . 5 of the same question on the front page.... it gets tiring answering these questions. from now on ill just have to post the "Lurk moar or 'use the search" its one thing to be excited , its another to be blinded totaly by reality and act as if all that matters is your tiny universe...

if you anwser a question you shouldnt have to re answer it 6 times in a day. for the common questions just dont answer.... if people dont anwser em maybe they will be forced to try and read.

look at the whole rust and 1095 sticky ... how often has that come up new? tons...

There are probably been about 20 rc5 vs rc6 vs rc4 style threads in the last two months.

Problem is, while it seems the same question, there's usually a diffrent trend in each thread. Sure, it might be annoying to see so often, but then noone is making you click it.
As for pushing off good info... Anything that's really that good is going to get bumped off the second and even third pages. So I don't buy that.

Each person and situation is unique. Sure I'd like it if they did some reaserch first and then asked questions, but really, this is a forum, not a book report.

We all define "clutter" and "redundancy" differently.
I personally think that the survival-kit-porn ("What's in your Maxpedition pack/altoid can/Bugout bag??") gets tiresome and boring, but I'm not on here telling those guys how and what to post. I just don't click on those threads and move along. It's not difficult.

I belong to several forum sites and this is the only one that you have to pay to search! I think the owner of the Blade Forum site is a knife seller/maker so I've wondered if that has to do with the "pay for the simple options".Also if you go to other sub forums here you WILL get a warning if anything is off topic or off color. This is the most laid back sub forum on this Forum Site. I like the Rat Forum and their knives but also think that the "survival B.O.B. and survival kits" should be in the survival sub forum here.

you are absolutly right, there is nothing more pointless than someone posting an off topic post when they could simple post their gripe in anything goes. why are there so many off topic posts as of late, that is almost as pointless as rc6 vs rc5 vs so on and so forth. wish I could say I was glad this thread was started but it is just as bad as the threads it is bitching about! just my 2 cents
