sanitizing a knife blade

stay away from bleach will defeat stainless in a period of time . as mentioned alcohol is great & any hidden moisture will evaporate . spray with a little rem oil , blow out with compressed all in the garage --ready to rock

A bleach solution is recommend for Bloodborne pathogen cleanup over Isopropyl. That being said, I would be very hesitant to bleach my knives due to the corrosiveness. I would soak it in Iso, clean it with anti-bacterial soap and water, dry it out and call it good.

Rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer which is just rubbing alcohol in gel form, or ACETONE which will kill it for sure, ACETONE is an industrial solvent used to clean and prep metal surfaces for fabrication, machining, etc. On a final note stay away from Bleach i.e clorox wipes Bleach is an oxidizing agent (BIG TIME) so is Chlorine.

If you use acetone, be very careful not to get any on your knives's scales if they're not metal. I'm not sure what types of plastics it doesn't like, but I once spilled a little on a guitar effects pedal and it melted the plastic surrounding the controls to the point where the knobs were welded in a fixed position. So I would be careful not to see if it messes with the plastics in knife handles.

Rubbing alcohol.

Bleach is not good for steel, nor for the scales.

I used to work with HIV and HCV everyday for 5 years. We used 10 percent bleach to wipe down the counter tops. Then after a few minutes later come back with isopropyl. I just spray my knife blade with Lysol if I buy a used knife, and I think that's way overkill, but after working with bloodborne diseases I got paranoid. Bleach is very corrosive and will rust steel. I also don't like the community razors they shave your neck with when you get a haircut.

Y'all paranoid. Don't need to do anything even if he got blood on the blade, other than to wipe it off.

If you have to do something, as the man said earlier, time, sunlight and air.

IIRC 70% alcohol is now the recommended concentration not 90%.

90% isopropyl alcohol for 15 to 20 seconds. (that used to be the enforced standard when I cleaned operatory rooms, but that was 35 years ago)

hand sanitizer which is just rubbing alcohol in gel form...
That is good to know. We have lots of hand sanitizer around work, so I think I will just remember to wipe my knife down once a week or so when I'm taking a break :)

i would've just let him keep it. chances are he would've done even funnier tricks with it, if ya had :) good entertainment is worth one slippy, really

Bleach diluted with water. I forgot the exact percentage we used in out virus Lab but maybe 5-10% bleach would work or 3/4 cup in a galloon of water and submerge over night.

If it's been two weeks HIV should be long gone and from what I have read (you can google this) your chance of live hep variants still being viable are pretty much nill as well. A bleach solution is the normal quick kill although it is corrosive. A quick dip should kill it and then a good rinse and your blade would likely be fine. Alcohol or iodine should also do the trick. Sunlight (actually the radiation) will also kill the viruses so that is another added alternative.

Honestly unless you were to cut yourself while his blood was still wet it would be EXTREMELY hard to pass on.

I use clorox wipes.

A quick dip in household bleach will kill ANY and ALL known viruses and bacteria. Doesn't need to soak. No need to dilute it. Just dip, hold for one or two seconds, and rinse off with plain water. (Remember to oil the blade afterwards.) This is what the bio-hazard folks shower with before taking off their hazard suits.

Alcohol will also kill of almost all known pathogens but it will take a longer period of time. Perhaps a few minutes soaking. Then again, a quick rinse and some oil.

You all get an 'A'. If I was really paranoid, I would be inclined to first wash the knife with detergent and hot water, which will remove any grease that can shield the pathogens from other disinfectants; immerse in a 10% solution of 5% Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) for 5 or 10 minutes; and finally immerse in 99% isopropyl alcohol, while working the pivot. The alcohol will remove any water left in the pivot or under the scales. If anything lives through that...run! ;)

Kinda over-the-top if you ask me. I would wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol, clean the blade with dish soap(obviously stay away from the edge), and then wipe with alcohol again. No different from my usual blade cleaning, aside from the alcohol.

Warm the tears of an angel up to 165*f and let the blade soak in that for 1 minute an 23 seconds.

Are people seriously sticking their knives in the microwave?

I read that too. It's really pretty funny. I can just see some idiot putting his knife in the microwave and watching it spark all over without realizing what he just did.

When I worked in the jail an inmate was cleaning a microwave. When he was done it was still wet, so he just turned it on with nothing in it thinking that would dry it out. About four minutes in, I started to notice the smell of burning electronics before I figured out what it was. Nearly killed the whole microwave right there on the spot, when I opened the door to stop it, the handle nearly melted. Some people are just stupid. I asked the inmate why he did that and he said that he didn't believe in electronics. A lot of funny things happened in that jail.

I would NOT go this route.
