Sanmei Steel by the piece!

Aldo, I'm fine with 410. Keep us posted. I'm looking forward to this.

I never could understand carbon core and stainless sides . All stainless or all carbon.Much easier in HT, and should also be better in rolling. I do have Falkniven laminates that work well , 3G or VG-10 with softer cores. You might be able to handle 3V core with stainless sides as the 3V is pretty good as far as corrosion. Mixing austenitic and martensitic stainless may have problems also.
BTW the only problem I've seen with laminates [all stainless ] is delamination especially at the tip .I wonder if this is just a rolling problem or overheating the tip during grinding.

It was my understanding that 420 would handle the higher temps of heat-treat better. 420/3V seems on paper to be ideal. I do not have much experience with 410. I defer to your knowledge and others more experienced than myself.

In our experiments we found 410 works very well. We used 1080+ for the core on the billets we sold. Faster quenching steels had problems delaminating.

We've had several 410/1080+ kitchen knives in use for 16 months and there have been no delaminations.

Mete, I don't understand it either, but it looks cool! Chuck, thanks for the info. With the pressures we are using I don't see any problems arising at all.

It looks cool but the real benefit is that the vast majority of the blade is corrosion resistant but the cutting edge is high carbon and easy to sharpen.

Also any chance we can get a shot of the choil of that blade to see the thickness of the blade and the core?

Thanks
John

I know im probably in the minority here but a 410 skin with a 1084 core seems ideal to me.

I'm curious, 410 and 416 aren't stainless until heat treated, but we won't get to the needed temp with the heat treat in the carbon steel. Is the cladding stainless, partially stainless, or not at all?

warren are you stretching that not stainless until heat treated on the 410SS a bit far? I have used many feet of 416 as bolsters and without heat treat have not seen any even after been used extensively in the field that is rusting. Frank

I genuinely don't know. That's why I'm asking. :) I have done a lot more blued mild steel guards, and 300 series stainless. I have 416 now but haven't completed any with it yet.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I've been curious if anything is still in the works for getting San Mai from Aldo?
