After some of their original non-locking knives using ball bearing detents grabbed some eyeballs, they seemingly faded away, presumably to focus on their domestic market.

But now it seems that SanRenMu has plans to go beyond the Chinese market; there is a new website called srmknives.com which describes how SRM was spun off from SanRenMu to focus on the mid-range market internationally. Sounds awfully familiar (Real Steel comes to mind...)

Right off the bat I'm kind of disappointed; the SRM-branded knives no longer use their own Chinese alphabet soup steel. Which means more expensive knives from the get-go.

And more importantly, everything now has a blade length of 3.2" and above. Tch.

They make sebenza and other clones. Copied the patented axis lock before it expired. Those new knives look very familiar too.

They are not a vendor here please remove the links.

No thanks.

Looked them up and was reminded …

Ohh dear, they've ripped off knife companies left and right. From CRKT (KISS) to CRK (Sebenza) and everybody in between.

Gotta love the description of one of their hideous knives, which I wont post here:

"This knife is made from a very special type of stainless steel. This will insure long life for the blade sharpness and hardness. We achieve this blade quality by a special process of forging and heat-treating.

You are all glossing over the fact that they have more original designs than those so-called 'inspired-by' designs that are sold only in Greater China.

Their non-locking folders that use ball bearing detents instead of backsprings are a good example.

I can probably go through my collection and easily dig out at least 5 different original Sanrenmu designs without any effort.

Not glossing over it. It doesn't matter when you are:

a) Rip-off artists.
b) Unrepentant.
c) Liars.

Ewww... and now they’re tied up with Ruike, which I thought was legit. Who runs Knife News and who there thought this was a worthy story. Isn’t Knife News GPKnives?

I know it's not popular, but I really don't care about the rip-off thing.

The costs of brands like Benchmade are just so ridiculous and unacceptable to me. The wheel was never broken, they reinvented it anyway, but it wasn't an improvement at all in my eyes or to my fingers. They just use patents to excuse gross and extreme price gouging. That's the way I see it.

I own a couple SanRenMu and Ganzo and do so very proudly. They use quality steel with good solid heat treats, from what I can tell. I like their lock back pieces and the rip-off axis lock, though I don't trust any axis lock knife, it's a terrible excuse for a locking system to me. I've owned a Griptillian and it was okay, didn't keep it. Found it outside a bar one day after a couple beers and a burger for lunch. I wasn't impressed, wasn't disappointed either, it was just too thick for my taste, so I gave it to a buddy. Never regretted that.

With 23 posts since April 2016, I can’t really say “read more, post less”.

No...wait... I can.

Lol not sure what reading more would do. If you have a point to make please do. Don't hint that I can learn if I somehow read more without any direction as to what specifically I should read. Just teach away mon senior.

SMH. You've come to the wrong place if you are proud to own rip-offs. Too cheap to buy an honest knife from a reputable company. Sad.

Solid logic, hard to argue with it. What's your position on Microtech?
It's the same. I'm sure anyone interested could find consistent comments from me.

I understand the argument that people make about some of the other Chinese makers who, people say (it's hard to know for sure), are former cloners/counterfeiters -- that we should encourage their good behavior by buying their original designs. However, don't treat me like an idiot and lie right to my face.

The way you see it is ridiculous.

They don't pay license fees for patented mechanisms. They don't pay designers. They don't pay all that much to their workers either. They don't do any QC or design testing. They use inferior materials to create cheap knock-offs from the work of talented, hard-working people and sell them to self-indulgent leeches.

You're right, it's not a popular opinion and for good reason, people don't like thieves.

Benchmade does have some expensive knives, but the majority of their designs are not that much higher than other brands.
