SanRenMu is getting original (kinda) and fancy (kinda) (picture heavy [kinda])

Wow, and I thought people on here were smart.
So now even color becomes a knockoff? Didn't know blackwash was ZT only.

Yeah. I really like my 763

WOW...All I can say is enjoy your $9 dollar knives. :D

DC

Always have - intermixed with my 40-250 dollar knives. I'm picky about lockup, build quality, and (to a degree) blade steels. SanRenMu does good work on the cheap. I only ever got one with manufacturing errors out of over a dozen, which is better than I can say for the three ZTs (0561 had a sticky lock and lock rock), my multiple Kershaws (Skyline had crazy sticky deployment, JYD and Lahar had side-to-side, speedform's blade rubbed against the liners and had a very uneven grind), Spydercos (a Both endura shad omnidirectional blade play, as did the paramilitary), and Benchmades (Contego had up-and-down play).

The only major company that I have never gotten a slightly-to-moderately defective product from is Cold Steel. SanRenMu has seemingly extremely high quality control, both for the price point and in general.

They even made a really ugly slipjoint:

This knife really reminds me of a "What do you think of my first knife" thread. It looks like they squeezed a ball of playdough and modeled the handle after that. Everything is rounded and mushy. A true design fail.

Not a knockoff but not original. I don't know of anyone else doing that look the same way ZT is, mostly it's just acid wash then stone wash. ZT stone washes their DLC. I'm guessing SRM is using a much cheaper coating but it's definitely not an acid wash.

So in that sense, it's much closer to blackwashing than anything else out there.

We've come to the point where everything new is going to have some design aspect of something that's already been done. People need to lighten up.

Its real easy not to read this thread. Just don't click on it.

Maybe you've never had your hands on a Sanrenmu or similar maker, but they are definitely not junk. I quite enjoy paying $9 or $12 for a knife that is in every respect as good as the other guys' $40+ knives. Which are also Chinese, btw. And as for whether we want to read about them, the answer should be obvious given the number of threads and posts they generate.

Do some of Sanrenmu's designs mimic other makers? Certainly. Weird Al Yankovic imitates Michael Jackson too, but I can tell them apart. Are there any actual pecuniary damages resulting from this mimicry - i.e., actual lost sales of the Benchmade 710 or Sebenza? No way. Not one person will honestly say that he was about to buy a $460 Sebenza, but decided instead to buy a $9 Sanrenmu. I quite like these cheap knives, because in their own way they reveal how overpriced some of these other knives really are. And I'm okay with them, because they aren't actually harming Benchmade or CRK. They are nice, good quality knives.

Is this the real Michael Jackson? You be the judge.

Hahaha noodle for the win!

Do people really want to read about third rate Chinese garbage on knife forums? I definitely don't.

Um...then dont?

I dont know...as a musician im used to copies. They dont take anything from the original sales wise at all, but sometimes they lead to the person actually buying the original. I mean do you know how many copies there are of a Fuzz Face?

what's a fuzz face?

anyway, I do dig most of these new designs. Do they share cues from other knives? Sure. Are they rip-offs? Dont think so. Are they good bang for the buck? A definite yes. I have several srms and none of them had any problem. BTW, that "fugly" slippie looks like it has really good ergos and a very sexy blade. I see my wishlist growing...

That's funny how you have the stomach to claim unoriginality, yet everything in this world is built upon some common foundation. Don't use drop points because you want to be original. Make your own TOTALLY original blade shape, then talk.

It's really hard not to insult people sometimes on this forum, as a lot of them seem to be missing some common sense in their closed minds and jump on any sort of bandwagon immediately.

Now me personally, I would not buy an SRM unless it was a cheap gift, I'll stick to my Italian made ERs or FOX.

Its a fuzz effect pedal made popular by Jimi Hendrix....there are like thousands of copies of it

gotcha, thanks. Back to the issue, there's very few "originals" in the knife world. The 710 might look like a scaled down sebenza but so does a lot of other knives that sell for a lot more. They are well made and inexpensive, what's not to like? and like it has been mentioned already, if someone wants to buy a sebenza, that person will buy the sebenza, not settle for a 710.

Basically my position exactly - except I feel it actually does the original manufacturers a service. Because of the 710, I've been seriously considering a Sebenza. Knockoffs of midtechs means trying out the shape of the knife and seeing if you like it without dropping $300+. It also allows one to carry an analog of their favorite but more expensive knife if they don't want to take something pricy with them to a particular location. That's how I use my cheapies, anyway.
