If you have game fish on a stringer, snappers will get them.Pulled up a stringer full of fish heads a couple of times.LOL Otherwise , it would be a pretty sick fish to be caught by a turtle.

Dennis, I hear you. I read this forum and many others frequently. I see all matters of activities in the name of survival. Many of these activities would be illegal and considered un-ethical in my area (or areas I have lived in previously). I think I have always managed to STFU because my area is probably not like everyone else's...and I can respect that there are different philosophies on conservation/preservation/protection...and I do not know EVERYTHING!

Perhaps some day I will know better about all parts of the world than those that actually live there...until then I will watch with interest and pray that you all continue to share.

If you do not know what I mean...let me tell you a story. I watched a video the other day and it showed these little kids running around torching the countryside...burning everything they cam in contact with. As I watched I slid to the edge of my seat and my jaw began to drop....moments later the narrator spoke and explained that the tribe elders encouraged the youth from a very young age to set the scrub brush ablaze. This was a means of bush conservation that the tribes had known and employed for MANY generations. I slid back in my seat and realized yet one more thing that I did not know.

Right or wrong, I appreciate the sharing that goes on here. In many areas of the world some animals and trees are way over populated and actually choke out other populations. If you better understand conservation in the areas people are discussing, please share the information. OTOH, if you want to post quips of disdain, I suggest keeping it to yourself...this guy is 71 and has a lot of experience (I doubt you are going to change him).

have a nice day

In terms of "quips of disdain", I would direct you to the OP's original reference to killing the turtle. I have no issue with killing for legitimate reasons, but I would strongly recommend those reasons be stated when sharing with the public, and in a respectful manner. Bear in mind that the overwhelming majority of people do not hunt, trap, shoot, fish, farm,or have any understanding of pursuits involving killing. Times have changed, even in rural areas people are increasingly disconnected from their surroundings, a fact evidenced by the decline in sales of hunting licenses. It is easy to shrug off the the opinions of the non-hunting public, but they're moving to the country and the inevitable result will be more restrictive laws and "No Trespassing" signs. Sad to say, but our future is in their hands.
As for my own background, I'm a life long hunter and am also a Maine hunter safety instructor. Along with my fellow instructors, Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists, and members of the Maine Warden Service, I've volunteered a considerable amount of my time and effort to promote ethical behavior and the public image of hunting. I would ask that not only hunters, but all users of our outdoor resources think about the potential impact of their actions and act accordingly.
This forum is a great source of information, it is regrettable when an opportunity to educate and further our pursuits is missed.

Hey Dennis,
I'm in Texas and need a place to chop up turtles and shoot trees. Drop me a PM and maybe I can help erradicate a few things. :)

Shooting the turtle was wrong, I am glad to see such a idiotic generation die off soon and this world will be a better place. We need to teach people to respect the land not just go out and fuck over what ever we want!

:thumbdn:

How about a little respect for your elders? I would assume your grandparents are about the same age as Dennis, is that how you feel about them as well?

Also, if you read his most recent post, you would understand he did not shoot the turtle.

Relax.

Next time, just say you don't agree with shooting the turtle, and leave the rest of that nonsense out please.

Based on the string of responses, I could have dinged the poster for trolling. Next time ...

my philosophy of nature has always been "leave something for the next guy". we are overrun with coyotes, turtles, & feral hogs. central texas in most areas has open season---[take as many as you desire] on squirrels. coyotes, foxes, hogs, turtles, rabbits,& mountain lions. these are unprotected species but i certainly do'nt kill everyone i see or run into. hawks & buzzards are protected. i welcome differeances in opinion but think personal attacks on individual contributors are not only rude but gain nothing in the way of knowledgable communication.it would probably amaze you guys but i do'nt even kill rattlesnakes. if can see them i advoid them. the only rattlesnakes i kill are those close to my residence or in a campsite where dogs & children may be endangered.i certainly will cut more trees & probably shoot more turtles & you guys have stated your positions clearly & I HAVE READ YOUR OPINIONS. i really do'nt think we should beat this dog any longer but if one persists to denigrate me personally may i suggest you change your diaper & wash your vagina. thank you

I'm gonna try to steer this thread back to the original topic.

Dennis, that knife sure is a sweet chopper. Nice work on that tree. Did you use a baton to help with the chopping, or were you just swinging the knife? Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.

If it only took you a half hour at 71..... your in better shape than me at 44!

Thanks for posting!

I'm going to break down and go cut a Live Christmas tree this week! I hope that doesn't offend anyone here. :D
