Just curious - does anyone find the saw on the SAK farmer useful? It's pretty darn small. Just curious if there's any reason to get this over the Pioneer.

the SAK saws rock... they are quite useful.... other than the SAK classic, i won't carry a SAK if it doesn't have a saw.... the saw on the OHT is a bit bigger, you might want to look into one of those....

I love the saw on my SAK's,one that is a little larger is on my USA Old Timer Buzz saw,it is similar just a tad longer.

The saw is great for cutting notches and such. If your a retard like me you have problems using just a knife for making notches for things like figure 4 traps. The saw helps me out a lot. I have one of the 2 layers Farmers on the way like the one Tknife has....just blade, saw and awl.

I thought the same thing - maybe worse. I have a modest collection of well-tuned hand-tools and I'm thinking "yeah, right, a saw on a $15 knife, made of stainless steel has GOT to be extra useless weight and girth. Man, was I wrong. I'm a woodworker and use a lot of "cordless" tools - old stuff as well as newly manufactured hand tools. Saws are one of the hardest tools to get in (or get into) decent working order - new or used and can be rather pricey for the really good ones. That said, and I hate to admit this but, the saw on my SAK Farmer, of which I was very skeptical myself before buying one, is one of the most well ground saws I own. The set (yes, it really has a set) is achieved by a very shallow hollow grind that leaves the spine thinner than the edges of the teeth so it does not bind. If you own one of these (or plan to) treat that saw blade like a fine tool because it is. I don't know how I would resharpen one but, as long as one is not abused, it should cut very well for a long time as long as you are cutting WOOD. OK, maybe PVC pipe is not too bad but I wouldn't use it on metal. It may work once or twice but I doubt it would last long. It is definitely worth the money, the bulk and the weight.

I carry the Fieldmaster rather than the Farmer but I won't carry a SAK without a saw. Sure, it is a little small to fell a tree, but it will work for almost everything else, and those little teeth are very agressive!

I once heard of a contest between two soldiers, one having the standard M9 bayonet (quite large and heavy) and one with a SAK with saw. They were to mow through a 2X4 in the shortest possible time. The bayonet armed troop chopped with his. The SAK armed troop easily sawed through the wood to win!

My rucksack, hunstman and oht fireman have been awesome. both saw and blade wise, very handy.

I've used the saw on my farmer to make about alot of traps..the back of the saw casts great sparks off a ferro rod, and I've built entire shelter frames using nothing but that saw..If I where dropped in the middle of nowhere with only that knife and a flint I'd wish for more but would be thankful for what the lord gave me..in other words the saw is great.

I much prefer having the saw. It is the thinnest of the three layers of the Vic' Farmer. Very effective for it's size.
Like Mike, I personally consider it necessary on a SAK, if it is gonna score pocket-time.
I don't use it for full-sized projects, but it helps when I'm bushcrafting, or enough to make a notch in a piece of wood so I can break it.

In terms of the Pioneer, it's more expensive than the Farmer, for slightly less.

SAK Saw is good to go:thumbup:

The saw rocks. I used mine on the 4th to cut a bunch of 3-4in osage limbs w/o any problems. It was super comfortable, and reall ate through the wood, and osage is pretty hard stuff.

I wouldn't want to build a cabin with one but they are not a bad little saw and defiantly super useful.

Providing that it does not break any BF rules, I will be giving away a knife to the first response to my 2000 th Post. The knife will of course be a New Mora 2000.:D

Stay alert, it won't be to long. If I am busy and miss it, you can remind me at j_a789@hotmail.com. After all, I am an old Codger.;)

The saw on the Vic Camper is comparably sized, and can be a very decent assett. It's no substitute for haveing something bigger (ie. a hatchet, chopper, or larger saw) for cutting the big stuff- but for trimming small limbss/ branches, kindling, etc... it is very handy. One way to effectively use it on thicker pieces is to make multiple cuts from different sides that meet up.

The SAK saw is great for its size. Every bit as great as a mora is for it's price. And, the back fo the saw can be ued to throw sparks from a ferro rod better than any broken hack saw blade.

I prefer the longer saws on the 111mm SAKs (I love my Outrider), but the Farmer saws work just fine. Very handy. Will saw through bone pretty well too...

I didn't read all the responses, but I can say that the saw on all Victorinox and Wenger saks are great ( save the style on the old GAK IMO) The saw on the farmer is the same on the hiker camper etc, and I've used them extensively, takes years to dull them noticeably...just take your time when cutting larger branches it's pretty easy to bend the saw if you aren't careful. Saying that, I bent a the saw on a hiker once so bad it wouldn't close, I figured It would break if I bent it back, but I straightened it out best I could and kept using it that was a year or two ago and it still gets alot of use and is dead straight again...from use apparently lol The saw is one of the biggest reasons I carry a sak in the woods.

Theo,,, Just be carefull I was showing this trip to a scouting group when the saw folded over and almost bit me... That would've been embarassing...

I wont use a SAK without a saw. I carry a woodsman (MainBlade, Woodsaw, Awl) and a Lumberjack (Mainblade, woodsaw, combo). Every SAK I carry has a woodsaw, and I use it a lot.... Hell every year at Christmas, we use my Fireman to cut down the Xmas tree. :)
