Sayoc Winkler hawk vs IIIA kevlar vest

Not a surprising result. Ballistic kevlar does not give a lot of protection against punctures by sharp implements. Kevlar works by acting as a net to catch blunt and deformable projectiles, hard sharp pointy things go right through it. Thats why you see the point of the ax protruding from the inside.

I now that, it’s just a lot of other tactical type knives don’t do very good against Kevlar. There is also the new plastic coating that some Kevlar vest have now (like the one shown) has that actually does stop most puncturing type weapons. It a thin rigid coating that some companies use to keep the Kevlar shape.

That does discredit the notion that bladed weapons have no place in modern combat.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the video!
Argh...the choice is tough....Winkler Combat axe...Winkler Sayoc...Combat...Sayoc....

Out of curiosity, have you tried that while the vest is draped over a ballistic medium?

Kelvar sucks Brother Edwood, try something from my time. We will etch your name on it and you can be the fashion statement of your troop.....Randy

When there is backing to the Kevlar the penetration tends to be deeper. The more resistances, the deeper the stab.

It’s hot enough with the plate carriers. But it would be very cool actually. :D

Ed,

Would you try it with the spike? i was thinking "what if" with the Combat Axe II?

I have tried it with the spiked end of the combat axe. Full penetration of the spike. the combat axes spike is a lot longer so I imagine it would do more damage.

Edwood can you do a photo or video of the smaller sayoc in your hand for size comparison. I am leaning more toward the shorter sayoc with spike.

Cheers

Here's a photo of the two together...another with the combat axe..I thinks these are Ed's pics anyway, not to step on his toes. Please Ed, don't think of my toes as a keychain ornament!

It's a difficult decision, not only when you can't hold them all, or afford to buy them all. Alas, I have chose to order the full length Sayoc RnD myself, more power!

We will see if Edwood posts it, but in an earlier post, he has actually used it against a vest being worn by some one in a drug bust!!!!! He posted the bloody vest pics after he hit the guy with the hawk to take him out!!!!!!!!

You don't get much more hard core than that!

I was looking at some antique halberd pictures recently and a question struck me--would serrations work well on a combat hawk? If so, large or small ones? Pointed, or flat-topped like on ESEE knives? If the bevel on the backside of the serrations was done as a scandi it would remain easy to field sharpen. I just wonder if it would aid it at all in chopping through fabrics. I don't think I've ever seen such a hawk, let alone one tested. Might be a bad idea, but I'd be interested in seeing the results!

See the example in the center below.
