Scammed

Brother, this has been covered a thousand times. It's not a bf problem. It's a user problem that would be solved if everyone used g&s instead of ff. Instead folks like you post your email and use ff.

People are blindly sending payments to these scammer email requests so the only difference would be that they could file a claim with PP easier to get their funds back. Most likely the scammer would immediately refund a G&S payment anyway.

In both instances the buyers here would still be sending the payment to the scammer regardless of paying with F&F or G&S, people need to slow down a bit and make sure they’re sending payment to the actual seller, not some random request!

True. Was definitely moving too fast. Slowing down and multitasking would have prevented this. Also a shame that email addresses are not scrubbed from the platform. Easily done but also no big deal

Yeah the difference is g&s is the safety net so you get your funds back, and ff you don't. There are other cases like hacked accounts and ghosting sellers where you also get burned paying f&f while you'd get your money back with g&s. That's why you always go g&s

Or, and humor me for a second here, just pay attention to the giant banner at the top of this page that's outright telling you not to use PPFF (along with a link to best practices)

I don't intend to be mean here and I do have a great of empathy for the OP but how many of these threads do we need to see on here before folks get with the program?

A good rule of thumb is: when in doubt, ask. That's what the GBU is for. No one needs your $$ so immediately that they can't wait a couple of hours. Especially if it seems fishy.
Humor me but aren't there many cases here that direct us to use PPFF additionally not mentioning anything in description? How would you deal with a seller like that who had that grail knife you wanted? Thank you.

For me, I won't buy from them, or I request PP G&S and offer to cover fees. PPFF is a non-starter for me, and I often won't bother looking further into a saled thread once PPFF is listed as the only payment method.

I guess you would have to make a decision if your grail knife was worth getting possibly screwed out of your money?🤷🏼‍♂️

No knife is worth that for me.

1) Refuse to use PPFF. Optionally offer to cover the fees. I've done this with almost entirely positive results. On occasion, I stumble on some knucklehead with 1-2 feedback and 23 posts that insists I send him $900 for a knife PPFF. I pass without reservation in that case.
2) Check feedback. Confirm identity. Etc. Again, when in doubt, ask.
3) If the seller refuses the offer because, wrongly, he's worried about the IRS reporting then it becomes a judgement call. I suppose you can offer to send a check or MO. For me personally, I've never wanted a knife badly enough that I'm willing to commit fraud or get defrauded. That grail is generally going to become available again (either via the forum or the maker); be patient and be cautious.
4) Remember, transactions require both parties to agree. That leaves room for negotiation. If he's selling the knife, it's likely because he wants your money and, assuming its not an outright scam, that gives you some leverage to negotiate the terms of the transaction.
5) This applies particularly when dealing with newer folks with minimal feedback. Adopt a zero-trust posture as it relates to sending anything. The tech sector has taken this approach for the last 20 years and it generally works.

Tough call on this one, if it’s truly your grail knife then you might have to take a chance after some confirmation PMs, their willingness to send a couple timestamp pictures, and make sure their sentences are grammatically correct. I wouldn’t have got scammed a few months back if I paid attention to obvious grammatical errors in the sentences.

Sorry to hear that. Sucks when it happens.

I am of the thought that no knife is worth the risk.

Offer to pay with G&S and cover fees? No way.
The seller wants my money and wants to sell his knife to me, I’m not paying HIS fees to have it. Uhuh-no-way.

I always sell with G&S.

I'm amazed that after innumerable threads on the topic we are still regurgitating the same, tired information and methodologies when at this point everyone knows what the best procedures are to protect themselves, their accounts, their finances and maintain their own integrity and that of the site.

I truly hope no one feels the need to make a report to staff if and when they are fleeced upon deciding to look the other way and take a flier.*

(*Spending untold hours trying to rectify these events tends to leave a mark after a while.)

In any case, the owner of this site, in concert with staff, has posted, (both above and in the rules and guidelines), what the best practices are for participation within the Exchange. Proffering and promoting methods of circumventing that advice is counterproductive. So, this thread is being closed.)
