Well I wake up today from my wife asking me about a charge on our bank account... a little over $220.00. Come to find out that it's a scam charge on an old debit card. So somewhere along the lines my card number was stolen. Showed the charge as DHL EXPRESS, which I obviously don't use.

Took a half a minute to think to myself whether or not I got a new HI knife that I didn't know about. :D But no, I didn't. So I disputed the charge and I'll be hunting the bastard down! Luckily we noticed it early on and got the card shut down.

I hear by calling them that there's a LOT of fraudulent charges going through in their name today. So you guys will want to look at your accounts. Had it been something like $20 I might not have noticed it... but when they charge me $220 and put my account into the negatives then of course I will.

All in all pretty lame play from whoever it was. There was an accompanying charge of .02 cents from Ottawa... so I might have to go up there and see what the deal is. :grumpy:

Anyway, thought I would let you guys know. I frequent Paypal, Amazon, and a couple other reputable sites. So, I'm not sure what the connection is just yet. Just keep an eye out.

I just got a couple new cards from my bank because they said my account had been compromised. I never saw any charges, but better safe than sorry

VISA Security put a hold on my CC and called me about a Skype charge that was posted against my account...I don't use Skype...(I can barely talk)...They said there is a lot of Skype charging going on lately... :grumpy:

They canceled my old card and are sending me a new one...:thumbup:

Yeah keep in mind this isn't directed at any seller here. I don't think anyone here would have done this. But somewhere out there a website has been compromised (since I'm very careful with my card numbers). So just be careful.

That .02 charge might have been to check to see if the number was still on an active account.
I had a Credit card hit for $1.00 and then an attempt to buy a pair of coats from a store in London for $3100. My CC company put a hold on that sale because it fits the "fraud pattern" and called my home. It was clear I was NOT in London!!.

A couple years back, an employee of Hollywood Video sold 800+ CC numbers and names/addresses...he got caught, but I know for a fact that Hollywood didn't notify everyone...I'm one they didn't notify... :grumpy:

Trust...No one...

Yes, I'm paranoid...but am I paranoid enough???

Many times, cards are compromised by phone transactions. A secure (https) website is the problem much less so.

Folks seem more willing to give all their CC information to a complete stranger over the phone, than to trust a secure website over the Internet. Doing so makes it much easier for the crooks...

Just went through a similar thing, nearly $750 charged to a Dick's Sporting Goods in PA, had to get a new CC and they removed the bad charges.

I just had a 20$ charge for something I never bought and had to change card. From now one I will only use single-use PayPal debit cards for my online purchases.

I just had some recent fraudulent charges on two different Visa Debit/Credit Cards as well... And a very, very long story short, the Visa Security department traced it back to a rash of Gas Stations in my area where crooks where utilizing "Debit Card" transactions for fraudulent purchases. The investigator advised me to stop using the "Debit Card" option when I used the card and instead use the "Credit Card" option.. Apparently "DC" transactions were going under less secure guidelines compared to "CC" transactions..

Suffice it to say I only used the CC option hence forth and have had 0 problems since then.

I too had a Skype fraululent charge, last summer. The scammers also ordered some porn in the same two day time period. Now that was hard to convince the CC company it wasn't me. :o
Finally got all the charges reversed and a new card.
all da best,
rats...

The reason identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America is because it is the crime that is the easiest to get away with. Law enforcement doesn't or can't do much about it. I've offered hundreds of law enforcement agencies ready made proof of credit card fraud in their jursidiction and had none take any interest in it. Zero. I finally gave up. The banks don't care because the merchants pay for it. The consumers don't care that much because they get reimbursed and get new cards. It is the merchants who sell the $3100 worth of coats that really cares. Law enforcement has more to do that to deal with out of state or out of country merchants.

As a former LEO, I agree with Knife Outlet, law enforcement views this as a low priorty. Sad but true. Many times the credit card compnay does not want to press charges, so there is no desire to caught a guy who "walks" and hour later. I ordered from Boker's direct web site about three months ago, and for the first time ever, my credit card was used for a fake $200 online purcahse. I have a Chase Visa card, and I saw the charge within a few hours of it being made. They quickly shut down my card and set up a new account for me.

I rarely use my CC's. I did set them all up to get instant e-mail notification of anything over 100.00 though.
It won't stop the transaction, but it will give me a heads up instead of finding it when I get my statement.

My sister had a bunch of checks wrote in her name last year. Turned out to be an employee at the company that makes the checks for her bank. Not sure that they ever figured out which one. You never know who's gonna rip you off. :grumpy:

Over here they compromise the ATM machines, get the card numbers and PIN codes, make new cards and rob like there's no tomorrow.

I had a call from my bank a while back asking if I was in Milan, I said no, they said, well somebody just tool almost $4000 out of you bank account at ATMs in Milan. I said, do what?

I checked where I had used the card and it turns out the ATM almost next door to my house had be cracked and the thieves had really robbed some serious money.

I got the money back because, I guess most of the other people did too, nobody got arrested and the thieves kept the money and got away stone free.

The cops did not really even care and told me basically nobody ever gets caught doing that and it happens everyday.

Robbing banks with a shotgun is out; the real way is robbing card numbers.

In the end, we, the bank customers pay for the losses in higher fees etc.

Mine is a little different. Some guy wrote a check out to me, then went to the bank pretending to be me to cash the check. It was for 5000.00, but they only let him have 2500.00. The way I found out was I got a returned check fee, and 5000.00 disappeared out of my account. Funny thing was the check was made out in Manahattan Beach, I live just North of there, and he cashed the check in Texas using an Illinois license. It was cashed at a Wells Fargo kiosk in a supermarket. I asked why the teller didn't notice that I have had an account with Wells for 20 years in So. Cal, yet I used an Illinois license as proof of identity. Eventually got my money back , but it was much more difficult than a credit card charge back.
