Schatt & Morgan?

I just picked up a great congress made by Schatt & Morgan. I dont see too many thread on this company...are they not very good?

It's a brand name used by Queen Cutlery; it's supposed to be their upper-tier line. And the best of the Schatt & Morgan is their "File and Wire" series, made with premium materials and in limited numbers. Of recent collector interest is the Heritage Series from Schatt and Morgan, exact reproductions of knives found in historic catalogs.

I have one of the File & Wire knives from Schatt & Morgan and the quality is very good, top notch in fact. My other Schatt and Morgan is a 2011 Heritage knife, and the quality is also very good.

What puts me off of the standard Schatt & Morgan knives, they charge premium prices but don't take the materials up a grade to match. They charge $100 or more for some knives, but can't afford to use anything better than 420 stainless? No Thanks.

I have one of their Railsplitter Moose'. I love the darn thing. One of my favorite knives.
The jigging is fantastic when "worrying" it in the pocket.

I love that "Reverse Worm" jigging they have going...one of them is on the list.

I have several Schatt & Morgan knives. Mostly Railsplitters but I have a few others as well.

There can be some issues with them but my experience is that those issues are the exception, not the rule. Speaking of the S&M congress, I have one of the Signature Bolster Congress knives from 2005 and it's a superb knife.

The history behind Schatt & Morgan and Queen is quite interesting too.

I picked up a jigged bone handled knife marked Inventory Cleanup. Odd that they would etch that on the blade but is a beautiful knife!

Schatt & Morgan are some of my favorites. I posted my gunstock in another thread, it's just perfect. I also really like my 2012 Heritage Premium Stockman.

The File & Wire knives are ATS-34 and the Heritage knives are 1095. So you do have some choices. But yeah, I'm not paying Schatt and Morgan prices for 420 steel. If you're looking for D2 specifically, that's mostly available in the regular Queen line.

I have one of the Grandaddy barlow S&M file and wire series. It was delivered with horrible liner gap, and blade wobble. I did a padded vice squeeze, peened the pin and sanded to remove the marks then polished on my loaded strop.

That is a lot of fixing on what is supposed to be a top of the line model. Some would say unacceptable at 1/3 the price.


That said, I love it. Its one I don't see ever selling. Ats34 steel has beed great too.

I almost bought another with the same issues just to have another to either give to my dad (who loves mine) or my son when he is older.

If they would just fit them a bit better before sending them on, they would be top of the market.

I really like the patterns. I agree they need to up the steel in the heritage models. If they would switch the steel to D2, squeeze the gaps closed, and fire everyone at the factory who thinks a 80 to 90 degree inclusive edge is ok, I would buy a handful.

If you can hand pick one get it, if you can't hand pick, make sure you order from a place that will let you exchange or refund.

I have a real love for mine now, after fixing the wiggle, and the gap. I would order it again in a heart beat, even knowing that I would get one with gaps and wiggle. It fixed super easy, and I have a very hard time leaving it out of the rotation.

I like Queen's D2 a lot. It's a nice steel for edc. I almost bought a file and wire with ats-34 but I got a nice Queen stockman instead. I have too much 1095. It's a nice steel for easy touchups but I prefer the edge holding and corrosion resistance of D2. I really don't understand why they use 420hc on their premium line. D2 would get me to buy them.

My S&M "File & Wire" Toothpick (4" version) in Golden Amber Wormgroove is one of my favorite knives - the fit and finish is perfect. Walk & Talk is perfect The proportions are my ideal for this pattern. The 2012 BF is my latest "big" purchase (hope it arrives today!) ... the next big purchase (> $75) will probably be an S&M F&W (Pattern TBD).

Big, I'm sorry to hear that your daddy was a dud, but it sounds like you made the best of it.
I have the same knife, and it is one of the best built, most beautiful big slipjoints I've ever seen.

All the File & Wire knives from series I through IV are beautifully made knives, with series III being my favorite.
The upgraded ATS-34 steel is really hard stuff, and holds a beautiful edge. Some examples.

Very nice! I've been wanting / looking for an ebony handled knife and this photo may be enough to push me over the edge (pun intended).

I have a S&M Railsplitter Whittler with reverse worm groove jig bone.
It looks fantastic in pictures, but it's actually a huge disappointment.
Massive gaps in the frame, very poor grinds, lazy walk n talk, and just feels cheap.
I know there are plenty of good examples out there, but mine isn't one of them.

since the Schatt and Morgan are a premium line from Queen, does this mean that their schields are also pinned? or are they also glued like the cheaper lines from Queen?
