Schatt & Morgan?

I have a grandad Barlow S&M.

I carry and use it frequently.

The fit and finish can be hit or miss.

Mine came with gaps and blade wiggle. I viced, and peened the pivot pin to fix it.

I love my S&M's!

I've got a few S&M's that I really enjoy but much like any other Queen knife from the last decade or so they are very hit or miss. I treat them the same as Case which I only buy in person or from another collector who has already verified it is a hit and not a miss. :)

lovely, that first heritage. i was pondering that on CK knives all night yesterday. how do you like it? was looking at the clip version

I carry mine a lot. After I fixed it, it became enought of a favorite that I bought another for my father. His came straight, gap and wiggle free.

Here is mine.

Here is what the gaps used to look like before I took a vice and hammer to it.

I honesty would like to own more.

But my initial purchase made me hesitant. My dad loved mine, and I ordered one, and got a better example, that I did not have to fix.

Question for ya'll.
Considering the high price of a Queen product, why do they generally get a "pass" for dull edges, and uneven grinds, "misses" in fit and finish, and the other defects that are so commonly mentioned in the forums?
Why? Loose/uncentered blades, uneven grinds, gaps, etc. that other makers are raked over the coals for such defects, but Queen gets a pass and praise for a knife with the same defects. I do not understand why Queen is held to a lower standard than even Buck or Case.

Seems to me it's a case of perception and perspective.
From My point of view I reckon Queen are not "high Price" they sit below GEC and offer great value for money in an American made knife.
Of the 8 Queen knives I have 7 are perfect IMHO none was delivered with dull edges, and uneven grinds, "misses" in fit and finish, and the other defects
The only Queen knife that I have that wasn't top notch when it arrived was an acknowledged factory second with some cosmetic imperfections on the handles and it is still perfectly okay as a user.
As for commonly mentioned in the forums I have been on the forum now for a couple of years and just twice (possibly 3 X ?? hardly common) have I seen a thread with Queen detractors - some folks just love bashing up very good companies on hearsay and rumor with no real foundation or personal experience.
If we continue to do this, pretty soon there will be no US companies making knives (RIP Canal Street Cutlery) and we will all have to make do with knives out of China - many perfectly acceptable - BUT none with any heritage or history and none creating and maintaining American Jobs.

Plenty of times in my life I have been told 'so & so' is a 'Rat-Bag' but when you get to know them they are perfectly fine upstanding people. Same applies to knives GEC or Queen or CSC...
For anyone considering a Queen knife or S&M knife DO NOT be put off by the likes of the above poster - get you hands on a couple and make up your own mind. Derek

I love S&M knives. My main EDC is a Schatt stag 3 blade sowbelly, it's like an old friend that I take with me everywhere. Although S&M have been around for so long, you're right that they don't seem to have the huge collector following that GEC has built up. Part of that may be due to the on-again/off-again quality at Queen Cutlery during the last 40 years. GEC's have been consistently top quality right out of the gate. But if you start looking at the pre 1960's S&M knives, they are all of very high quality, and quite a good price range for new or experienced collectors.

Well said Brumby : The first Barlow that I bought was a Schatt & Morgan and there is not one thing about it that I can fault. I just prefer the size of the GEC 77 Barlow . I also have a Tuna Valley Gunstock , made by Queen , and it is just perfect.

Love my keystone series 99 scout single blade. It's the schatt and Morgan take on the Indian River jack.

Great question. Same goes for GEC on this forum. Just look at the classifieds...a little blade play...a bit of a rub...a bit of corrosion (but it came that way)..."typical gec lockup"...etc. ad nauseum. I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you. Just like I don't understand why northwoods sell at such a premium on this forum. It's a Queen or a GEC, right? Sorry, I really don't mean to offend anyone.

Steven,

Is the second from the left the baby sunfish? I've been eying the stag Pennsylvania shield version. For a few years. But the being in clear on its size, blade shape, and proportions had me hesitant to pull the trigger.

Any chance you could post some comparison pics with something common, like a gec 15, a buck 301 or something for perspective.

Great looking knives.

thanks.

Jim
