I was planning on buying Mistwalker's SCHF9 and started doing some research. I remember someone saying on here the steel they used for the blade was 1075. The Tailor Cutlery website says the steel is '1095 High Carbon Stainless Steel" and that the handle is made of "stainless steel". The same goes with the SCHF5, which looks like it could be a nice cheap alternative to the BK11 or the Izula, except for the completely retarted brass knuckles they tried to incorporate in the sheath. So does anyone actually know if these knives are stainless steel or 1075 or 1095 or what? and if the blade is high carbon, why meld a high carbon blade to a stainless handle?

I suggest that you don't waste your money to find out the quality of the Taylor Chinese made knives. Evidently, even they aren't sure what steel they are made from. You would do just as well to buy a United Cutlery knife, IMHO. There are plenty of good alternatives in better made knives. Unless you just want to buy a cheap one to look at and not use.

Ive got one and thinned the edge out and it held out fine over a weekend in the woods. I was under the impression it was 1095.

As long as it's carbon steel throughout I think it looks like a decent knife for $40. There's a review on youtube where the guys says it's 1070 but I wouldn't be surprised if it's really 440a.

Oh I have had some interesting experiences with Tailor Cutlery, that's for sure... but it was all crap surgical stainless. 30 bucks seemed like a good deal for a 6 inch survival knife made from 1095, but maybe that's asking too much. I have a Rodan on the way anyway...

I didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade and, in fact, had second thoughts after I posted the above. The knife may well meet your needs. I don't have one of that pattern, but my experience with other (admittedly earlier) Schrade marked fixed blade patterns sold by Taylor were not good. But this knife could be well worth the $35 to you, depending on your use and expectations. :o

Well, I'm a 1095 lover, I use a RC5 as my beater, but I was thinking this would make a good beater for a spare bugout bag. we'll see, if I have money left over at the end of the month I may still pick it up.

I think the main problem here is that Taylor uses so much stainless that it apparently catches everyone off guard when they use something else. I've seen it listed as several things... and the 1095 blade, stainless handle had me lmao...it's a full tang design all of it is made of the same steel. The handle is Kraton scales.

Another problem is that I originally specified 1095 in the original drawing, and then later asked if it were possible to do it in 1070. I was told by Morgan afterward that the knife of 1070 the same as the SCHF1 & SCHF2 and so far I see no reason to think otherwise.

I like how the one I've got handle's, but lately I've been thinking of micarta scales and a bow divot.

they did micarta scales on the 1 and the 3, it would be nice if they'd use them on the 9. So it's definately not stainless? it's either 1070 or 1095?

Only if 440a rusts easily and has a thing for magnets :)

Sounds like part of a couple of conversations I had with Morgan, early on and then later when I was first pushing for 1095. Also the reason I only got to design the one instead of the original three I was asked if I'd like to design. I felt it a worthwhile concession in that getting one in the steel I wanted was better than three in a steel I didn't want, and I still feel that way.

roger, what the hell I'll buy one and check it out. Thanks mistwalker

No problem man, curious to hear your thoughts on it later. I think it's well worth the asking prices I've seen...but then again I'm a little biased right ? :)

Can someone get a couple good pics of the sheath. I'm kinda curious about this knife but I havent seen any pics of the sheath yet.

Thanks, I'll almost posted those but then realised I didn't show much detail in those so I took a few

I've had mine for a couple of months now and really like it. It's one of the best bangs for your buck out there IMO.
It fits the role of a jack-of-all trades, master of none knife very well. Excellent design Mistwalker.

Here are some size comparison pics.
