Maybe this will help. I typically buy cheap <$20 knives for work because I don't like intentionally destroying/fouling up/losing good knives. I was a dock builder in NJ in my younger days; (hence where my appreciation and love for stainless over carbon was born), but I can't tell you how many tools, knives, phones, etc went overboard and "into the drink" as we'd say. I currently work in a steel foundry with its own hazards and before this did commercial roofing around adhesives, glues, caulks, etc. I typically have job specific tools on hand, saws, scissors, razors, whatever, so my knife is extra, and I personally can't justify bringing a $75+ knife to work, only to beat on it.
That said, my old work knife, a Gerber BG Scout lockback:

3.6" blade in Gerber "mystery metal" labeled "stainless"
Could be 440a with a piss poor HT, more likely 420j,
$18 at Walmart, $23 at bladeHQ
its the worst knife Ive owned, only time its ever had an edge was whenever I took it ever so gently across a grinder, and nevervheld that edge for more then a day. I kept it out of sheer stubbornness, but never liked it, finally just the other day gave it to a guy I work with who never has a knife and pays half his checks in child support.
My new work knife:

Schrade sch220bk
3.5" 9cr18mov blade, composite similar to 440c
10x the knife the Gerber BG was. Sharp enough to cut hair out the box, and has held it's edge all week without a touch up. $16 at bladeHQ, and only problem I had was a high screw in the handle I tightened down.
I can guarantee, in the wilderness, Bear Grylls don't trust his life with a Bear Grylls Gerber, they just paid him $ to use his name to sell their junk. And I stand by my saying, "if I want a cheap blade, I'll buy a schrade! (Or Taylor made)".
