Scotch Dispenser - "a test to the loyalty of fan boys" ?

I try to stay out of it when I hate a design. I just don't buy it. I dislike some of the most popular designs out there by many makers. The designs I do end up liking and using aren't always very popular, but I don't think I need validation for my taste in blades. I do like the camaraderie and desire the fellowship we have in admiring each others skills, trips, mods and so on. The idea of testing the fan base by introducing a lukewarm design has crossed my mind (not necessarily in this instance), but let's face it, that really isn't Jerry's style. But if he did perform this experiment, so what? I bet his annual report still looks better year by year, and we're still going to buy some of the designs.

yeah, just doesnt seem like jerry. ive only spoken to him once, so cant really say for sure.

but many of you know him well. spent time with him at shows and fogos. sure we spend a bunch of money, but he does a lot for us as well.

why test a fan base and run the risk of losing a portion of it?

i think he came up with a design, thought it was fun, cool, whatever, and put it out there for us to try out.

Just to add: If you think about most small necker designs, one thing that they DON'T offer is any sort of full-sized blade guard. Many Busse knives have an effective guard by way of the handle design and talon hole/guard, but some are more pronounced than others. One benefit, I think, of this design for a necker is the security it's going to offer with that index-finger hole.

the mojo's had a full gaurd. the yard hook from (scrap yard?) continues that line.

imo, the ring on the sd provides no protection in an offensive (as opposed to defensive) mode. since the ring only covers one finger, it is arguable that it is not very effective at striking.

honestly I've found single ring knives have felt more capable of breaking my finger in a full stab on a hard/solid object then protecting anything. the insides of the fingers have the least amount of protection for the bone, and the finger bones (and metatarsels) are just not meant to take localized lateral pressure like that.

+1... Seemed a silly design when I first saw it, but... It grew on me a bit, and I decided to get a pair and find out hands-on. Only then will I be able to form an opinion. I STILL want one of 'em to be ground into my 'Beer Chaser variant version... Please, Jerry???? :D

cant do that, looks to much like another knife someon else makes... lets see if I can find it!

The most striking thing to me about this design, is its similarity to the LaGriffe. I don't think anyone argues that the LaGriffe is poorly thought out. Rather, the attitude seems to be that it is a very pragmatic design. If Busse's prices weren't so ...high, I'd probably look into one of these knives.

Jerry isn't testing his fan base, that is a crock of shite. I can't decide on the SD, I'll be like Hammy and with hold any opinion until I handle one. I think Jaxx's bottle opener mod in the hook area is a darned good idea though. We can speculate all we like on the design, but that is where it will stop speculation. Getting details out of Jerry is like hammering nails with a wet noodle. :D

Opinions Vary,

Buy the knives you like and leave the rest.

I like very few of the newer Busse knives, those that I like I buy.

I feel pretty confident in my ability to look at some pictures of a new knife and read the specs carefully and not be surprised when it finally arrives but I just cannot get my brain around the SD. I've been considering just getting one because at least I know its INFI and how that will perform. Maybe leave it on a hook in the kitchen for those times that I need a really, really sharp knife for a rough cutting task that I end up doing with my chef's knife and later regret.

The fact is that Jerry said this was a military overrun, and even though we might not like the design, some people in the military do. So what does that say about this knife? That this knife is useful for some.
That's good enough for me.
This is NOT a "customer loyalty test"!
I don't believe that Jerry would do that to his fans.
From what little I've seen Jerry honors his guarantee and respects his customers.

i dont recall this being a military overrun.

Illiteracy is amuseing, or amuzeing, or is it amuszeing, or amoozeing,...

Amusing, isn't it!

We had hoped to have the SH1A up next but we have been slammed so hard with military orders that we will need to hold off for a while until our production catches up and we can fit it in.

In the meantime, we will be offering one of our current mil. production run pieces, The "Scotch Dispenser", along with the classic and highly sought after Anorexic Assault Shaker (3/16" thick)

Both will fall under the $150.00 mark. . .

The Scotch Dispenser is remarkably comfortable, very secure, and easily concealed!!!

Nuke On!!!

Jerry :D

in fact, this entire thread is moot. jerry is offering the scotch dispenser becuase the company is having a hard time doing both military production models and civilian production models, so they are offering something that is already in place and being produced.

so ya. nothing to do with testing anyone or anything. just a design thats currently in production for other purposes that is part of the extra small size busse catagory, that goes nice with the anerexic assault shaker, and doesnt require production shift and recalibration.

I wouldn't call the Scotch Dispenser a test of any kind. I do not own one, so I do not know how it fits the hand, but it looks to fall in somewhat the same back-up fixed blade category as the Ka-Bar TDIs, and those do their job just fine. It certainly seems to have a functional cutting edge, which is something that cannot be said of certain Strider knives (Tiger OL or what was it?) from the thread referenced by the original poster.

The issue of Busse's military versus civilian production confuses me, though. Why not just produce the military stuff? If it's good enough for the mil, it should be good enough for the civilians. :D

Could someone please post pix of this knife in their hand when they get it? Much appreciated!

The idea that any business would spend the cash to produce a product to test fan loyalty makes no sense to me. Seems Jerry has a pretty good idea regarding the popularity of his products and the loyalty of his customers. I wonder what Busse COmbat thinks of this thread

I kept trying to envision how my four fingers would grip the SC, but now I think that is the wrong approach. Blade in a dropped position, index finger in hole, the rest of the grip palmed. Useable as a slicer in this position, but also as a not very recognizeable push dagger. I would think that larger hands would like this more than smaller ones.

Dang, now I've just about talked myself into ordering one.

Ya know? I bought a plain edge Dog Fish when I was in Grand Prairie a month ago. <$20, it felt good, what could I lose? Actually, it has been a sweet little necker.

I'm going to have another sheath done, though. The kydex one that came with it - well, I'm not sure it is kydex but more of a cheaper plastic - I left in the car residing in the manpurse (actually, a Bugout Bag from CountyComm - call it what it is - "manpurse.") The day only got up to 80 F. I had taken the blade out for something - the sheath was empty. It basically became pliable enough to reform flat. I had to cram and shove that blade back into the sheath. Too tight now... how to fix? Leave it in the car again, in sheath. :D All good now! Great little knife. Crappy little sheath.
