Scout knives vs SAK

^^^ yeah get it now :D I still really like this knife - I'll probably leave it in my back pack or in the glove box. I'll definitely take it boating this summer.:D Or I might give it to my ten year old - it'll slow him down so I can keep up.
Here's the pic for the records.

As someone on BF once said, "I wish people would take better care of things that someday will be mine."

Reminds me of those car commercials where someone's getting in and a bystander says, "you're the first owner, I'm the second owner. Take care of my car!"

Looks beautiful, and so what if it's heavier than an SAK. (Buck 110s and 112s are heavy too.)

Agreed. I was just surprised by the girth of this knife and how well built. It's funny how deceiving size and perspective are in photos. I really dig the patina on the nickel and stainless. What a cool knife!
You're links and photos got me started on this quest.

I must say that I do actually prefer the can opener on my R-4 scout over the can opener on my Vic Pioneer. The Vic can opener is much better at opening cans and all. But being honest, I never open cans anymore. The Camillus claw of doom can opener works great for opening up boxes that come in the mail. The sharp claw dives right through packing tape, and then you can just rip it right along the seam of the box. No adhesive stuck to my spear blade. I may end up sharpening the claw to make it even more effective at cutting through messy stuff.

You might like the Victorinox Pioneer Rancher. I don't really use mine since I like the canopener on the alox Soldier for Phillips screws but the small pruning blade on the Pioneer Rancher is great for opening boxes.

I don't think that one would work for me. Lack of a bail or key ring is pretty much a deal breaker for me. It's the same reason I never carry my Electrician Plus. I'm weird that way. My main blade always needs to be secured to me.

The first BSA SS Scout pattern. Thought to be a cut above the other Ulster BSA knives. But I have noticed they show on ePrey with disproportionate incidence of tips broken off the can openers. Be cautious.

Personally, I've found the best can opener on a knife to be those on the later Wengers.

Noticed that. Perhaps an inherent weakness in the design or manufacture. (Or maybe 50+ years' accumulation of poorly scrubbed-off pork-and-beans finally overcomes the steel...)

I like my we for can opener. I have never even seen an ulster up close, but that one is a beauty
