Scouting for Scouts

Dang...I am nerding out on this thread right now. My first knife was a Scout - brothers destroyed it and I've missed it sooooo much since!

This kind of thing that makes this place amazing!

Beautiful knives (and pictures!) folks! Michael that was an incredibly generous offer! Here are a couple more for the fold, a NYK Official Scout and a NYK Buffalo Bill scout knife. You can barely make out the "Great Scout Bill" etch with his likeness on the clip (Official and "Buffalo" were etched on the left side of the image near the point, but they're not readable at all anymore):

Great gesture Codger and I was going to caveat my post with something like I think Camillus may have made most if not all of the blades for the Ulsterschrades. However, that Camillus five blade has a different awl from my Ulsterschrade. The awl on my Ulsterschrade looks like the one on the "Case" and "Kabar." And I have seen a different phillips head out there on Ulsterschrade knives.

As I don't think Camillus ever made anything with Swinden keys (right? RIGHT???), I guess Ulsterschrade did a lot of assembly of Camillus blades or begged, borrowed, stole, or bought the blade tooling from Camillus.

El. Oh. El.

Do you really think that is celluloid on that last Cub? Or just some less-than-delrin plastic? You see a lot of Cubs with shrunken scales like that, but I think they are from the 70s, long past the heyday of celluloid.

Also, can someone explain the "narrow waisted" screwdrivers on the NYKCO Scout and Buffalo Bill? What are those all about?

As far as I know, Camillus never did use the Swinden key method of construction. On the Camillus S-cards I have from the archives, quite often parts would be supplied to Camillus by the Imperial or Schrade factory for their SFOs. Camillus did assemby for both. Schrade, Imperial Schrade includes the Ulster marked knives. Generally speaking, it is my understanding that when you see a Camillus blade on a knife from the associated companies, Camillus did the assembly. Phil Gibbs would be the one to ask for confirmation, though Eric may also know.

In his own words :)

Camillus Cutlery Never used Swinden Construction.
