Scouting for Scouts

COngratulations Daniel! You just won the Codger BSA sweepstakes! Did you see Jeff's Ulster BSA on page 1? Well it's twin is yours! Just email me your mailing address and it will be on it's way!

Wow....generous indeed !!

PM sent. Thank you!

The best part is that model looks exactly like the one I had growing up. Sweet!

My brothers buried it in the dirt for a couple weeks and then "found" it later. Completely pitted, scales popped off, blade dinged up. I'm pretty sure they did more than they admitted to....Hahaha!

Someday I want to get one of those jugged Delrin Ka-Bar Scout knives.

I was actually just looking at some 1950s models down by the bay. Anybody know if they are making new modals or if they have abandoned that style of knife? Haven't really been keeping up with KABAR for some reason. Probably because I can't suck up the coast of the new copersmith barlow lol

The newish Kabar slippies are made by Canal Street. They havent made or have made (pretty sure the ones shown in thread are Camillus made), regular slippies in a decade or two at least.

Not sure whether this knife fits the description of 'Scout' or not. The tang stamp reads "ULSTER KNIFE Co. U.S.A." and the lanyard bail is stamped "U.S." Possibly a WW2 era or post war military issue knife? I dunno, all I know is I like it. It's heavy, built like a friggin' tank, and the blades got VERY sharp pretty easily.

WWII-era Ulster Mountain knife and a beautiful one at that!

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a mountain knife? Is it the blade selection, the group it was issued to, or something like that?

ETA- did some googling- Waaayyyy cool!

Yep! And the phillips bit was to adjust ski bindings according to Albert. The specs requested by the OQMJ just happened to fit the camp utility knife pattern that Ulster already had tooling for. A very nice example!

Just for clarity and accuracy, it's OQMG - Office of the Quartermaster General.

Correct. It was a typo. Also... I just reviewed Baer's memoirs this morning and the phillips bit was to adjust recessed screws in the steel runners used on skis, not the bindings. The older I get, the more I used to know.

Here's my Hubertus camper. It's not really a traditional pattern but then again it's a very traditional pattern. You can make your own decision.

This is a Remington Bandit scout. It's a very solid knife.

This is a RS3333 with a faint bit of etch still there.

This is the smaller RS4233.

This knife to me is the best made scout/camper of the bunch. All the blades are ground perfectly and are easily accessed without busting a nail. Of course are friend AG Russell put his name on it.

Here's a Bulldog scout.

This is the one everybody started with when I was a Kid.
