Scrap Yard Knife Passaround

I'm definitely excited to handle one.

As a side note, some people who do passaround raffle the knife off at the end... just a suggestion!

That is a good suggestion. I'm sure you all would love it. However I think I will keep it for myself :D.

You all can just enjoy it for the week or so that you have it.

Well, I mailed the knife on thursday April 3rd to Cuts Like a Kris. I have been tracking its progress and he should be recieving it shortly and then using it and giving it a small review. Then once that is all done it will be back in the United States and we will not have to worry about Customs.

I would have never figured it would take so long to clear customs I have shipped things to far less developed countries than Canada and had them clear faster.

Cool!

You'd be surprised. I lived in Canada for a while, and we would drive 3 hours across the border to ship things and receive things instead of having to ship and receive through customs. Crazy, eh? ;)

I got it!!! Just came in the mail. Customs opened it so I guess that may be why it took a while (but from my recent experiences it isn't that long).
So first impressions:

SOLID-built for the Pry Bar camp for sure. But at the same time DULL!!!! I expected a bit of an obtuse edge but I am having trouble getting it to cut paper, let alone anything on Manilla rope or shaving hair. The handle is a bit thin & square from first impressions, but is very solid in the hand. I stabbed a block of wood in both reverse and forward grip and the knife held solid, as well as a few seconds on my hanging training dummy (but hardly cut through the jean jacket). Don't care for the choil design- too far from the handle so Index finger is separated from the rest of the fingers. If the choil would touch the handle it would be more to my liking, rather than having the rounded portion between the choil and handle. I like some little features on the handle- there is a small divot on the thumb ramp and on the underside of the grip- this leaves a thumb ramp in both blade up and blade down grip, and the plunge lines are softened so they do not dig into the hand when choking up on the blade.
The pinkie catch works very well when I chopped with it- I only used a 2 finger grip on the handle and it felt secure. Chopped fairly well, a solid chopper for the size. The knife balances at the blade/handle junction, which surprised me as it chops with a blade heavy feel.
I took it to my Spyderco Sharpmaker and the 30 and 40 degree sticks only touched the shoulders of the bevel. I don't think I will try to get the bevels
down as I am a sloppy sharpener and don't want to scratch up the blade too much (still too new and new car syndrome). Maybe a bit of convexing at the high angle if that is OK with all involved.
So that is my first report with handling it Pics and more coming later (and a surprise).
Oh yah the last pic is with the Forum knives that I got in the mail yesterday.

Nice, I'm glad you finally got it. I just checked the tracking info like an hour ago and it said that the knife had arrived at your local office.

Yes the knife came very dull. However I dont know how to sharpen at all so I wasn't going to learn on that knife. Go ahead and sharpen it up if you want to. This knife was built to be a user and I want it to see some action out there.

Feel free to have fun with it. The knife feels completly solid in the hand and while I never stabbed it at anything it doesnt suprise me that the knife takes it and asks for more.

I look forward to seeing more pictures.

Thank you for the preliminary review.

I'd like to join in on this one since I missed my opportunity for the DC Mutt. If that's too many people on the list it won't hurt my feelings.

Tally Hole CUTS LIKE A KRIS!
what are your impression of the handle material-Resiprene-C? have you ever tried it before?
May I suggest trying some chopping with it and other handles and let us know what you think ;)

Well I dont know what Cuts Like a Kris will say but I am fairly impressed with the Res-C handle material.

I was worried about what essentially looked like rubber but the stuff feels very tough and solid yet has some give, which as others have said before would probably aid in preserving a hand while chopping or such.

CaptInsano. I can add you to the list as I would like as many people to get a chance to try out some Scrap Yard Steel. Please message me your address information

The Dumpster Mutt DC is surely of the "sharpened prybar" school of knives. Very rugged, but not very sharp as they come. I did a little work on mine and it cuts pretty well.

Is that one of your fabulous beltgrinder convex jobs? If so, the bevel looks different than some of your others.

I'mmmm Back!!

OK so I have been busy this weekend but managed some work with the knife. Here is what it looks like after a trip to my 4x36 grinder and diamond steel (messed up the finish a bit so I am to blame if it does not come back in new condition).

It isn't too pretty, and not as thin as I would take it if it were mine but I wanted to keep it as a sharpened prybar, as that seems to be its intended purpose. It is now hair scraping sharp, will slice paper at the right angle, and slices through my clothing dummy well enough.

I'll admit that it has grown on me, but still don't care for the choil area- just too much separation between index and middle finger when using choil. I like the Res-C handle for chopping- it chops better than my other blades its size- but most of my blades this size are for slicing not chopping. The handle absorbs shock well- is more comfortable than I thought it would be upon first impressions. It is what I would consider for one knife only survival (solid) or military uses due to its thickness and mid size. I still don't think that it is for me, unless it is the right price (or if I messed it up too much "sharpening" it ;))

OOPS- almost forgot this:

ScrapyardSheath2.jpg

Hope you don't mind me clothing your baby but it is snowing like crazy here and I can't in good conscience send it away without something to wear:D

It is one of my fold over Kydex sheaths, no rivets or glue in it. I have used these for a few years and have not had any problems on my knives. The neck cord is cheap paracord (not 5 strand), tied with multiple slip knots as I have a very big head and others will probably want to adjust it to fit their small heads (ummmm... not that small head guys:o) I wore it around today after making it and it actually carried very well for its size- surprised me. Very solid grip on the knife, but a quick jerk sets it free. The blade goes into the crease (not the fold over) and there is a bit of a thumb ramp.
I might not get a chance to get this out until the weekend as it has snowed enough that I am not walking to physio until the snow clears up a bit and my fiancee is on courses until after the post office closes each night. Hope that is OK with everybody.

Questions? Comments??

Thanks very much for the opportunity to try this out- now I know better what to expect.:D

def a hard military use and abuse knife.
:D
it can slice pretty good with a nice edge though.
(so I hear)
and you can't beat the price.

I'd kinda like to get in on this pass around (as I've never handled a D mutt) but I don't know whats involved or if CD wants anyone else in on the pass around.

CD??

Wow I have been checking back regularly and the one day I get busy is the one day that a lot of stuff has changed.

Kris, I cant believe you messed up the knife like that expect to see a bill from me comming directly. (j/k) Dont worry it looks fine, and now it actually does cut as well as pry. Nice review and sheath. Thank you, I imagine it was getting cold without pants on.

JerkeeJoe. You are next so when Kris is ready he can email me and I will give him your address so he can get it shipped to you.

CaptInsano. I got your email with the Address information.

Eatingmuchface. Sure you can join please send me your address information. However I think I will now OFFICIALLY CLOSE THE PASSAROUND TO ANYONE ELSE THAT WANTS TO BE ADDED. I miss this knife already and I would like to have it back some day.
