Well, I've had a few days to use the DM now, and overall, I really like it. I've used it for general everyday chores mostly; food prep, cardboard cutting, box opening, etc... I also took it out to the mountains for an afternoon hike and got to do a little field testing.
The knife is definitely a beast! I didn't have to worry about being too delicate with it. Too be honest, for this size knife the thikness is probably a little overkill. I'm not sure what the Mfg. intended this knife to be used for primarily. The blade shape and size are excellent for an all-around user in my opinion, but the thickness is closer to that of a large chopper. If it were my knife, I'd probably grind the edge to around 15* on each side to thin the edge a bit.
In use around the house and kitchen, the knife performed OK. Slicing and preparing of veggies and other food would be easier if the steel were not so thick. Cardboard was easily cut to create a couple of boxes and a backing for a project. The knife stayed at the same level of sharpness through all tests demonstrating great edge holding ability.
Up on the mountain, I used the knife for basic fire prep, splitting some small pieces of wood, and some very light chopping. This is where then knife definitely shined. I've come to love knives of this basic size and shape, and this knife was no exception. The blade shape makes it extremely useful as an outdoors knife, and on this knife, the thickness alleviates any concern about damaging it. The knife wasn't the best chopper, as you might guess, but considering it's small size (for chopping), I'd say it did pretty well. I was able to chop through some 2-3" branches pretty easily and also was able to split some kindling off of some larger dry wood pretty easily. This knife was at home up on the mountain, and performed any tasks I wanted it to rather well.
Some general notes. I love the handle material! It was very grippy even when wet and was very comfortable. The handle shape and angle are also very comfortable. I really only have two gripes about the knife. First, the blade thickness. This really isn't even a problem as a good sharpening at a more appropriate angle would solve most problems with the thickness while retaining the benefits of a stout blade. Like Kris, I didn't want to change someone else's knife that much, so I left it alone. My only other gripe is that the choil is definitely too far from the handle. No matter how I tried, I just couldn't choke up on the knife comfortably. I like choils on knives like this generally, and it would be fine on this knife if it were more comfortable, but as it is, the choil is nearly unusable for me.
All in all, I really like the knife! If the choil were a bit better designed, I think I'd buy one, but as it is, I've got a lot of knives this size that have a more comfortable choil.
I can try to get the knife out this week, or I can keep it until Monday or Tuesday and make a leather sheath for it. Let me know what you guys want me to do.
Thanks again for the opportunity to play with your knife!
ETA: My camera batteries went dead after around 4 pictures on the mountain. Unfortunately, they were all of scenery.

I can take some kitchen pics if you guys want, or if you want me to hang on to it and make a sheath, I can post knife and sheath pics. Let me know.
