I need a knife that can withstand all the abuse I throw at it and still come back for more. I need it to hold an edge pretty well (Due to poor sharpening skills, but im working on it), stay very sharp, wont break under pressure. I have debated between these knives for a while now and I cant make a decision. I like the SRK's tactical look and it has some pretty good reviews. For the Scrap Yard knives, I was reading a bit about them on their website and they seem like the knife from the BIG MAN HIMSELF. The are tough and seem INDESTRUCTABLE. Anyone who has had some experience with any of these knives, I would appreciate your opinions. Thanks for the help once again guys!!!

like everything else, what will you be using the knife for and i also noticed you said your sharpening skill were poor a knife like the SRK is no easy task to sharpen because the steel is thick and hard otherwise i think you will see about the same performance from either knife

Well...

--1/4" stock is more robust than 3/16"
--Resiprine is tougher than Kraton
--S7 is tougher than 0170-6 in hard use (the latter will hold an edge longer in some cutting applications, such as repeated slicing of abrasive materials like rope or cardboard; however thick, large bladed knives like this are not the optimal choice for that kind of work)
--Radiused tangs are stronger than square-shouldered tangs
--One has a lifetime guarantee, the other doesn't

So yes, I'd give the nod to the Scrap Yard in all categories. SRK is lighter and so nicer to carry for some, and also would be the quicker of the two as a fighter but that's about it. Even the Scrap Yard's blade/edge geometry is superior (full flat grind on a wide blade versus saber grind on a narrower blade) in spite of the greater initial stock thickness.

Price would have also been a consideration once, but since Camillus' demise and the disappearance of the old Carbon V Cold Steels, a good condition original SRK is no longer the price bargain that it used to be. I have absolutely no experience with the newer CS knives, so I can't speak to their quality, and I can't remember what steel has replaced 0170-6 for them.

I can promise you that you will not be dissapointed with any knife you buy made by Scrapyard knives !!!!
And I doubt if you will ever break one either but if you do , just send it back !!!

I've got a dumpster mutt and I love it, the only CS product I own is their recon tanto in carbon v.
Although the tanto has a longer blade (although thinner and narrower) the DM feels like a more substantial knife in my hand.
The only thing I don't like about the DM is that it's handle is a little small.
Right now my DM is my favorite go stomp about in the bush knife, and it would have to be a heck of a knife to replace it

My Dumpster is my EDC as well bro !

Where in BC are ya ?

Not only designwise and materialwise but perhaps most importantly Scrapyard's heat treat is ways away superior to Cold Steel.

Problem is I don't think Scrapyard has any to sell at the moment. Your only choice may be second hand.

Just outside of Vancouver.
In my teens I spent a few summers in the Cambell River area and hunted every fall there for a few years as well. My cousin and aunt passed away in the early 1990's and haven't been back there since

Well if you do come back for a visit drop me a line !

I'll actually suggest Ranger Knives. I'd easily say that they are in league with SYK and in my opinion Justin is a much better person to deal with. I have had my Rd-4 for 6 months now and with heavy use have only had to touch it up a few times. Justin's 5160 is some tough stuff. Also you could get any variation of any knife he produces because his opperation is custom. My RD-4 (3/16th) can do pretty much anything I ask of it and probably performs bushcraft better than a SYK. Although I think the nod goes to SYK in terms of choppers. Better handles + better chopping steel= better knife. When, if ever, I need a huge chopper (8+ inch blade) I will go to SYK. to two great companies!

Either knife will do you well, to put it simply. The Scrap Yard is "better" but the SRK is a decent knife in its own right and I would not feel slighted carrying either one of them. ;)

I have and use both the scrapper6 and the DM. You can't beat them for comfort in hard use. The handles are just a pleasure to hold onto when you are really crankin' on the knife. The DM does have some hefty blade geometry for a 5in. blade. So you would be more than satisfied with the guts that was built into it. But, you will be able to get a Scrapper6 at a better price because the DM is a one time shot so they aren't going cheap. I'm carrying the SC6 with me on the road right now because I think that it rounds out as a BOB knife a bit better than the DM. But when I'm at the farm it's the DM in my back pocket.

I have nothing but good things to say about
dan and patti, they are great to deal with.
Pitdog if I head up your way I'll be sure to drop you a line

Swamp Rat Knives? Scrap Yard knives are like buying the cereal that comes ina bag at the grocery store, except it actually tastes the same as the stuff in the box that costs 2x as much.

I believe the SRK he is referring to is the Cold Steel Survival Rescue Knife (SRK), not Swamp Rat Knives. Note the threads title.
