Scrapper 6 vs. CS SRK vs. Dumpster Mutt

Been using a Scrapper 6 around the house and yard for a while now.

Comfortable, indestructible, yes.

Keeps an edge for a long time, no.

In my experience, the HT and steel combination on mine puts it somewhere below 420HC and somewhere above a cheapy kitchen paring knife.

So I use it for blunt-force-trauma garden tasks, and leave the newsprint-shaving to some of my other toys. :)

Cool thax guys. So another for ya... Scrapper 6 or Dumpster Mutt?

And where can i get ahold of one of these. I checked the site and they are out of EVERYTHING!!!

I believe the SRK he is referring to is the Cold Steel Survival Rescue Knife (SRK), not Swamp Rat Knives. Note the threads title.

Ahhh. Well, I don't have a SRK, but I think I've heard of people on here breaking the tangs.

Well the scrap yard knives are a little thicker but that doesnt mean a better knife in all cases.

Is SR-77 any good? How does it compare to 1095?

Personally I just got a 4-5 inch duty blade. The spyderco dayhiker. Not as thick but that shouldnt be a problem till i need to cut down trees, and besides, I have an axe for that.

SR-77 is SYK specially heat treated S-7 which is a shock steel used in jack hammer bits. At the hardness SYK gets it it is pretty much the best steel for big choppers/camp knives in terms of the cost to performance ratio. It will likely be better than 1095 for chopping wood but 1095 is so nice and easy to sharpen and holds it's edge nicely so I can't see the need for anything better. The Dayhiker looks like a great choice. Congrats!

I have both an RD9 by Ranger Knives and a Scrapyard 6".

Justin at Ranger Knives re-beveled the edges on both knives to the point where they can be brought to a shaving sharp edge but still are good for chopping. As I received them they were not exceedingly sharp, but they were stout and good for chopping. Justin optimized them.

I'm not sure of the correct teminology, but I'll describe it my way.....

There are knives with extended tangs and knives with full tangs.

A full tang goes into the handle and is as, or just about as wide as the blade. An extended tang runs into the handle, but is only a thin sliver of steel. The CS SRK has the latter.

After seeing an SRK without its slabs I lost confidence that it was as strong as people described. Not a bad knife mind you, but would not offer the same level of strength as one of my Swamp Rats with a full tang.

Hope that makes sense.;)

You can't go wrong with any from the Scrapyard but the Dumpster Mutt packs a big punch into an average sized blade making it a perfect all rounder !!!

That is a good description. The Scrap Yard knives do not have as full of a tang as the Swamp Rats, but it isn't a sliver like the SRK's either.

I have been trying to get a dumpster mutt or scrapper 6 for quite a time as well and check the website everyday. I lucked out a few days ago and got a Swamprat ratmandu on order (they lasted about a day on their website).

Having never been a big fan of Coldsteel, I might also suggest some Bark River or Fallkniven products.

Bark River knives are excellent if you're leaning toward a sharper, thinner, better edge-holding edge, but with somewhat less "indestructible" feel.

I don't know anything about Fallkniven but I've also heard good things.

Another -1 for Cold Steel.

Think about that for a moment, fish. :)

Well yes, but 1095 was originally developed for use in coil springs. Very few popular blade steels were created with knives in mind. Absolutely everything is a tradeoff--S7 will do a hell of a lot of things better than 1095 will, and the reverse is every bit as true.

Ok, now how in the heck can I get a hold of either a Scrap Yard Knife or a Swamp Rat Knife? I went to swampratknifeworks.com and then where do you go from there? I cant figure out where to get either of these knives? Some help would be appreciated.

Ok why arent any available? Also what is the difference between Scrap Yard Knives and Swamp Rat Knives?

Swamprats are full length, full width tangs and are made of SR101 ball bearing steel. These have Micarta handles.

Scrapyard are full length but not full width tangs and are made of SR77 shock steel. These have RES C handles.

Scrapyard are cheaper to buy, both are guaranteed for life !!!

Ok why arent any available?

The reason they aren't available is that since their inception (both Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard) their supply has never been able to meet the demand for their products. Every once in awhile, when they've built up a stockpile of knives, they'll show up for sale on the company store websites, but they're usually gone within a couple/few days. The wait for getting the knife you want is the one downside of dealing with these outfits, and for many people that wait is a deal-breaker. However, it should never be thought that it's a wait that's born of lack of willingness on the makers' parts. I've been to a couple of Blade Shows, now, and watched the "feeding frenzy" taking place at the Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrap Yard tables that starts as soon as the doors are opened to the public (a phenomenon faced/enjoyed by very few other sellers at those shows). They show up with a U-Haul trailer packed with knives, and head home empty or damned close. And you can be sure there's a reason that they've been this popular for this long.

If you don't want to try your luck at catching them in their brief windows of availability direct from the shops, there is an entire forum dedicated to secondary market Busses, Rats and Scrappers over in the "Production Knives for Sale" section in the Exchange area here on Bladeforums. The warranties still apply whether you buy them direct from the shops or not. Of course, secondary market prices tend to go up, but if you watch a little while and shop a bit you can usually do pretty well. Again, supply and demand. ;)

Best o'luck
