Screwed Up S30V Blade!

What does this mean? From the spine to the edge (top to bottom) or along the edge of the blade (end to end)?

if you wouldnt mind the butterfly being gone put a satin finish on it by hand. if you want a mirror finish you can even put one on by hand but it will take some time.

nemesis27 - Thanks, will try it after I figure out what a green scotch brite pad is :)

Green scotch brite will be found in the kitchen cleaner section of the grocery store. It is the green stuff they attach to one side of a sponge for scrubbing porcelain sinks, but they sell it sans the sponge as well. Home Depot has it in the broom/mop area with the cleaning supplies. I sense some frustration, but really you did not do anything all that bad. Stay patient, and keep learning from your mistakes, it is a journey, and it is enjoyable, if you allow it to be. You may just find that this becomes your favorite edc knife, once you learn a little more technique and you get it so sharp, you just have to carry it everyday, and find excuses to cut stuff.

In my shop I would use a fine scotch brite wheel but that would probably leave that area a bit brighter than the finish currently on the blade. I have seen scotchbrite wheels small enough to use on a Dremel on fleabay.

I don't like etches so I would just scotchbrite the entire blade and remove the etch.....

I found the scotch-brite polishing wheels on eBay. Probably have them in the local hardware stores too. They offer course, medium and fine.

OOps - qestion answered above "fine" scotch-brite...

i have some that are called combi wheels. there is a thread somewhere with the info on where to get them. i know its an ace hardware. they are about $20. each. i use 2 different ones for different finishes. here are the pn of both pn 048011 with this number directly below the pn 05974. its a gold scotchbrite. the next is red with 120 grit strips between. pn 051144 with 80678 below the number.

Now that you've posted in the makers area, first of all, use diamond sharpening stones, S30V has huge carbides that are not going to be touched by ceramic rods etc.

I use DMT diamond stones from Howard Schecter, and they will work beautifully on any steel. I hate to dis your favorite knife, but that knife came with a cold chisel edge not a sharp edge. Be sure to sharpen wet. Laying the blade down to make a much narrower angle is actually a good thing, it will increase the ACTUAL sharpness of the blade. You will run into limitations imposed by the huge blocky carbides which will want to fracture and fall out (S30V will only take a so-so edge because of the carbides, it will look like a hacksaw under a microscope) You will want to find a silicon carbide paper with grit equivalent to the finish on the blade and carefully stroke it in the direction the factory left its scratches in, or just realize that it's a tool and make it sharp and use it :D

I appreciate you guys sharing my pain. Really I do. I'll tear into this knife and make it sharp or wreck it by trying. I'm still ordering a new one for going to church, parties, dinner and such. Yup, I'm that AR about my gear.

Dude, seriously, do not wreck your favorite knife trying to sharpen it. Get some junkers, make them sharp, then go back at it with some more practice under your belt.

In time, that pain that you felt in your gut when you realized you scratched your knife will seem silly. After using and sharpening it a dozen times how it looks will cease to matter and new knives will hopefully not be getting scratched by slips.

Does Benchmade sell a replacement blade. They still make this knife. They say in the warranty if you break the tip it's like $25 to get a new blade.

Just wondered if anybody knows. I'll call them Monday. A good night's sleep has brought things into perspective. I'm not crazy po'ed at myself anymore - just a little bit though.

tnt-user - Sorry to see that man, tragic!

So you think that a few scratches will now make people think you are an assassin when you pull it out? I bet no one would even notice.

No, I think people will think I'm an ass! :D

I can't relate to your mindset, so all I will do is post this picture of one of my favorite EDC's :D

What do you plan to do when you cut a cardboard box with your benchmade and you get light scratches on the blade?

I've cut a bunch of cardboard and it never made a mark on the S30V blade.

That's a fine looking Spyderco, what was the price tag on it new and what was the steel type? :)
