Seafood for Good Friday and Ash Wednesday, the majority of us are gonna eat it, so how will you get it? Seeing a thread about crawdad traps gave me a little food for thought. How am I supposed to eat all of this seafood and not go broke (seeing as how I'm a college student).....I'll just catch it myself!!! How about you guys? Any camping or extended fishing trips to save yourself a $20-40 dollar meal for your families? If so, what are your popular methods for catching that miraculous free dinner?

Good luck fishing, J.

In winter I go crabbing in White Rock. Its real easy and plenty rewarding. You toss a piece of liver in a cage and chuck it in the water. Then you pull it up in a half hour and its chock full of crabs. If the weathers good you can toss the cage back in (after emptying the crabs in a bucket of course.) Once we came home 19 crabs and this was after chucking all the small ones back in the ocean. In summer I go fishing for bullheads, herring and a whole bunch of other fish I dont know (just regular silver ones).Crabbing isnt expensive either. All you need is a crab trap ($35), about 200 feet of rope ($15) and some bait. (liver or herring works great.) It was while cutting the hook off a fresh caught herring for bait with my buck stockman that I learned the importance of a lanyard near water. :(

For crabbing, you need a very specialized trap. It's desighned so that the crabs can get in, but they cant get out. (the doors swing into the trap but cant swing outwards.) I bet you could use a makeshift trap if you had to but, your bait could drift out of it or the crab could get out before you pull it back out.

there is also a smaller cage inside that holds the bait.

I see you are in Texas. Have you ever fished for white bass when they are running? They should still be going now and if you hit them just right, you can easily catch your 25 fish limit in a few hours. Get a couple of buddies, fish over a weekend and you will be able to feed your entire congregation. I know in central Texas they are stacked up in the Colorado and San Gabriel Rivers. If you have any whites near you, give them a try. All you need is a spinning rod and some ultralight roadrunners.

Limb lines and YoYo's at the lake. Put out about 10 or 12 lines along a stretch of a 1/2 mile or so. By the time you get the last one set you can paddle back and start taking the fish off and rebaiting. We do this in kayaks at night. --KV

For certain it's a Catholic thing, I thought all christians did it . It has to do with Jesus fasting for 40 days. Then after 40 days from this wednesday is Easter.

Makes sense but I am not a Christian (even though my name is Kristian:o) so I would not know about it- thanks!!

P.S. My fiance is Catholic but detests seafood so that is another reason I have never heard of it.

....LMAO...So if she is a hardcore catholic then she just might be a little hungry for the next month or so :D.

(I eat everything so this is just a good reason for me to start fishing more often than I already do :D....The GF can't say no to that if I say, "You said that I should get more involved in church, so that means right now is a good time to start pitching in and get some fish.")

3wolves, i do the same thing out in whiterock but i use raw chicken instead of liver :)

although IIRC, you need a salt water fishing license to catch and retain crab?

cheers

yeah you need a licence but their not expensive and you save about 300 times that because of all the great crab and fish you get. (one licence for both)

I ice fish for trout. Alot of frozen fish sticks! And lastly there is a nice little restraurant that makes some excellent breaded cod...it is delicious. Also, grilled cheese, tomato soup, lentils etc. You don't have to eat seafood specifically, just no meat right?.

That's true, but if you don't want to become a vegetarian overnight, the fish is what is advised to eat, something to do with Jesus and fish. Not 100% sure, I was born Catholic, so I guess I just go with the flow (no pun intended for you river fisherman).

Find yourself a Knights of Columbus hall, chances are they'll have a fish fry. :D

My church does have a knights of columbus fish fry, but they still charge a good $5-7 bucks a plate. I'm sure that is a great deal in Canada :D, but for a broke college student, that's going to add up every friday.

i too suffer from "broke college student" syndrom :o

being in 3rd year of studies its even worse

good way to make a few extra bucks i've found is taking those surveys in the psychology department. 30min of your time can easily get you 5 bux. take a few surveys and you've got enough for the days meal :D

plus its an easy way to kill time :)
