Searchign for a knife for the wife

Spyderco delica is a great size with a lot of color options. Depends on what your wife really wants, as well. She may truly want a keychain knife, or a 4 inch plus folder.

The delica, dragonfly, mini grip, mini bugout, or maybe a salt version Spyderco would be a good choice. Cool is in the eye of the beholder, though.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys.

She's not a knife person and I feel like most of my knives are a bit much for her. As for the price, I'm not looking to spend a ton since she will only carry it occasionally and she'd get mad if I spent more than $100 on it anyway lol I'm just looking for something that she can be comfortable with and enjoy, something a bit softer and more approachable.

As for letting her choose, well that would ruin the surprise, wouldn't it?

I like the Delica but it's a bit pricey here at around $160, I probably should have mentioned Canuckbucks. Sadly this put's a lot of Spyderco knives out. Swagger would be a nice option but can't find the red one here, actually can't find a lot of the colourful version of these knives here. Might be limited to whatever I can get here

My wife is a serious chef, often breaking down boxes, or cutting the tops off of boxes. She never carried a pocketknife before, even camping.

I bought a Spyderco Squeak with Elmax steel, and she loves it. It is a slipjoint, so no locks to fiddle with. Blade shape is optimized for cutting boxes with small hands, it has tons of leverage, and rarely needs sharpening. As a chef, she's good at sharpening things, anyway.

She likes it even more after I figured a southpaw would need the clip on opposite side than me! The young cooks we have always marvel when the old lady pulls out such a wicked sharp pocketknife while they look around for box cutters!

For something that will be very unobtrusive, I would go with the Christy. It is not a manly man style, It isn't available in colors but is available in brass. Made in the US by a family owned business. As sharp as any knife I have ever owned.

No cool factor? Surely, you jest.

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 Lightweight Lockback Pink FRN $98.00

But the Mini Griptilian sounds groovy, too. :)
Definitely the pink Dragonfly! I know that's smaller than you were thinking, but got my gf one for her birthday last year. She loved it and carries/uses it all the time.

If you aren't opposed to a small fixed blade, check out the Blackjack knives model 155. Comes in a few colors including pink. Convex edge 154cm steel, 3" blade, kydex sheath. Bought one for my wife over 5 years ago, and she loves it. Uses it for everything she shouldn't and it's still going fine. Some of the pink has worn off, but it just adds character. Another good one that's a fixed is the bk14 Eskabar, or even Essee Izula. I have a bk14 I bought 7-8 years ago that I still carry every day, mine had a horrible sheath though. Don't limit yourself to folders, these small fixed blades can do the work of even bigger knives.

I got my wife a nice Case trapper single blade just after we were married (uh, that's 52 years ago:)). She used it to dig potatoes from our garden. I realized then she is not a knife person, but a serial knife abuser. Anyway, she tolerates my hobby, I keep our knives sharp and we're still together😍.

Maybe Victorinox Hunter XL ?

One problem
you may take it from her purse very soon :^D

The only suggestion I have is to make sure it’s easy for you to keep sharp and will survive being neglected.

Wonderful post 😀

Now I wonder if you also have cutlery knives with bent tips, where they’ve been used for non-standard and unusual tasks? (We do….)

I'd also vote for a 58mm SAK--especially as a gift for a non-knife person (they are far more likely to slip it on their keychain and actually have it on them when they really need it.) There is a variety of 58mm models to choose from and something like the Classic comes in many different colours and fun designs.

Otherwise, it is kind of a waste of time and/or money to buy a 'nice' knife for a non-knife person--they simply won't share your same level of enthusiasm. It'll probably just end up living in a drawer somewhere.

Just my 2¢...

Good luck, OP!

Take her to the local knife shop or sporting goods store that sells knives, or to your favorite online retailer.
Tell her she has $(amount) and let her pick whch knife or knives she wants to get that are in her birthday budget.

Who knows? Maybe she'll pick a Mora and an Opinel or 3 layer SAK with scissors, like the Huntsman or Pioneer X.

SAK would be my top choice. If you are considering only single-blade folders, get a mini-griptilian. I am not sure how many ladies can get over the "odd" looking of Spyderco Delica or DF2 even though for me they'd be great choices as well.
