SEARS KNIFE WORLD

Hey Charlie- thanks for popping in :) ,Wow- great to see that wee Camillus in your first post- I remember Charlie Noyes saying that he had one and wished he still had it- something along those lines, I had one exactly like that- but without the Etching,so I sent it to him- how neat seeing a Sears example!

Man That Four Bladed Cattle is gorgeous- I love those - Such a well built Knife in every way- thats such a nice one!

And here it is... I was hoping you would show that Craftsman 20T Charlie! 😍- we e-mailed and " talked " about that Knife quite some time ago! that's at the top of the Grail list, Thank you for sharing these Charlie.

lol - I swear I wasnt watching you Charlie- trying to type with 😂🤣stumps, Man.... those two Stockman are almost worth going to prison for , I remember us talking just how good Camillus were and how they seemed to be missed out from what is deemed top pinacle collections- I think that these Knives are right up there and your two outstanding examples are proof of that.

Note the same Sears Number 9475 etch for both the Camillus and Ulster - possibly a year or so difference of presenting them -

You are sure collecting the data, Duncan!!
Campbellclanman Campbellclanman I have another wee poser for you, literally and figuratively!! I have this tiny Stockman - I guess you could call it a junior!!
It is only 3 1/8" long!! It has the actual tang stamp of "Craftsman (over) U.S.A."
I see Rodgers Bone or Camillus Bone??!! Can you date it, Duncan??Mini stockman 1.jpgMini stockman 2.jpg

I have been greatly anticipating this thread! Many thanks to you Duncan for hosting it! I will share my two contributions. One is my Delrin 4” Stockman, made by Ulster. It is everything you want in a 4 inch Stockman. Snappy, tight and a workhorse. It is in my heavy weekend rotation.

And then this cattle knife is an absolute delight to own. It is a recent acquisition, one in a giveaway hosted by Campbellclanman Campbellclanman . This was one of several of Roland Proctor’s knives he was graciously re-homing. I have immensely enjoyed it. It is such a great, pocketable knife with beautiful jigged bone.

Thanks again Duncan!

I have a couple of 4" stockmen, nothing old enough to have bone handles, though. I believe this Old Crafty to be from the early 1970s but post Walden (1972-'73).

This one is a bit older with the Schrade Walden tang stamp, but still post 1961 with Delrin covers.

My oldest is a Western built model L36 large hunter with the Craftsman tang stamp, late 1940s era.

Charlie, this type of Knife was exactly why I wanted to dive into the Sears Knife World- because these Knives give us so many questions, and not knowing ( me ) gets to me a bit.

The Catalogs are such a great source to find these knives, but in all of mine there are a few that I cannot find definitely in Catalogs - and yours now joins them, and every Knife I cannot find in my collection is like yours with No etch, No model Number- simply the Tang Stamp, yours may have had an etch, possibly not.

I spent quite a bit of time looking through the Catalog pages ( that I have)I find the perfect sized Knife, with Rounded Bolsters, same Blade assortment - but NO mention of Handle material getting into the later years such as '49, '50 etc. Then when looking further into the years again when you find the same knife in size and blades- the Handle material is simulated Bone or Bonite.
Also when looking through I think " Got it".. but it's 3 & 1/4 inches long.

To add I am certain that not every Knife was in their Catalogs, if I were to guess that knife would be between 1943 and 1950? what are your thoughts on that Charlie?

So...This knife too adds to the list of.." One day I will find this"

JonMcD, Great too see those two - That Bone on the Camillus is gorgeous isn't it!

Hey Jeff - Wow - always love your Posts, I too share the Old crafty with you Sir, the 9542 is Stamped on the Tang of my one, I see that in the Catalogs they show the Old Crafty's first appearance in the Xmas 1966 Catalog Page and went from there on..

Jeff that Western is absolutely stunning  - your collection is something I always look forward to viewing :D - thank you for sharing.
I have a Western Sheath Knife from Sears buried somewhere- must dig it up!.............................( a few minutes later ) Found the Photo! Forgive me Jeff - nothing like your amazing example..

Wow- P&G - Darn that is one real nice example of a Camillus and Sears result, Gorgeous! Thank you! I will post some of my ones at a later point I hope others do too.

Jer - Thank you - its neat to see these knives starting to come out the Woodwork!

Nice Knife EchoScout!

I am certain your Knife is shown here at the end of 1941 (Winter - end of '41 Rolling into Craftsman's big year in '42) model number 9474- there should be a very very faint number following remains of the etch towards the Tang. There is a couple of versions I have seen, one has the Lucky Sportsman Etch with 4 leaf Clovers, Both share the same Sears Model Number 9474.
Here is your knife 3rd shelf down to the right of the 69 cents..

Continuing with the composite theme that I started the Thread with, more Buckhorn, this time on the Stockman...

The lower Knife- our friend Jer has already shown, this is a 50 Year anniversary of Sears celebrating the 50year use of the name Craftsman. 1927 to 1977.

The Top Knife is a Gambles Knife- made by Camillus - but this Gambles Store Knife shares Sears & Roebuck Pen Blade - and that Pen is the slightly elusive Sta- Sharp ( over ) S .R Co. which comes from the 30's.
I think Neal Punchard is bang on with his thoughts that this S.R Co. stamp must have been used for a very short period of time during that era.

I don't think this knife has been apart and had a replacement Blade, this Knife being manufactured under the same roof I think this it is Factory, kind of cool having the mixture of the Two completely different Firms stamped on the Blades - that come from the same era.
Forgive me as I did have a cloe-up photo iof the Tang stamps, but that seems to have vanished.

Here is the knife by itself - Love this stag

That Gambles knife sure is a dandy! 🤠 Dont believe I've ever seen one in stag before.

Hey Meako

Oh so you have a Ted Williams too! that's so cool!, That Jack and Stockman in great shape! hope your doing very well matey :)
Cheers Dunk..yes I am.
Sadly the etch on that blade is all but worn away..but old pics showed it up...As for Buckhorn/Staglon...dont forget the sunscreen.
I have a good old UH stockperson that was quite obviously left on a shelf for years...its almost as new on one side but very badly faded on the tanned side..so not 'indestructible'...With that in mind I wonder if the makers of these beaut knives moved away from natural materials for economic reasons....likely....Or ..like my Grandad fell for the "new so it must be better" idea....? The most notable thing about that... is how we have arrived back at bone ,wood, antler and most notably mammoth ivory as the primo scale materials of today. Dont get me wrong..I love a nice bit of Delrin but ironically that seems to have been replaced by micarta type materials and modern acrylics...
Which opens up the question...Is anyone doing artificial antler anymore? Closest I get is "stag bone" which is carved bone...
Apologies for the sidetrack.
Cheers.
