SEARS KNIFE WORLD

You are sure collecting the data, Duncan!!
Campbellclanman Campbellclanman I have another wee poser for you, literally and figuratively!! I have this tiny Stockman - I guess you could call it a junior!!
It is only 3 1/8" long!! It has the actual tang stamp of "Craftsman (over) U.S.A."
I see Rodgers Bone or Camillus Bone??!! Can you date it, Duncan??View attachment 2185836View attachment 2185837
Charlie Sir
The amount of time looking for a 3 & 1/8 has been a drilling exercise - if I find anything 3 & 1/8th it is in the Dunlap Family or slightly latet in the years as mentioned before and has Composite Handles, at times I think I have found it- but there is a Sheeps-Foot in the works - so this knife is the very closest - it has the same blade combination, the ONLY discrepancy is that this knife in the Catalog states that it is 3 & 1/4 inches, I am hoping a re-measurement may come back as good news- other than that my friend in my catalogs there isnt anything - (knowing this wont stop me looking through them all again though ).
1947 Sears Christmas book page 212 - very top right Knife J.

Nice to see that Sears had a Harness Jack made; even if it's a low-tier knife!!!
Hey Charlie

Both Neal and I spotted this a short while ago - your comment on Sears having a HJ, for interest sake- check out this Catalog that is in full Wilbert display, check out the left hand column, 5th Knife down - :) Oh to get one of those!!!

I think a very special mention should be made that Codger here on Bladeforums is THE leading person on Sears, and we are so lucky to have such people here around us like this. Codger has had many discussions on Sears and Sears related topics and is an inspiration for myself and I am guessing many others.

Great thread, Duncan. I have only one Craftsman knife. A later cattle knife with the black plastic handles.

Charlie, waynorth waynorth , I have an old Boker canoe that is a dead ringer to your Wilbert celluloid harness jack. Slanted, ringed and pinched bolsters with a round end bar shield and a long pull spear blade. Not a harness jack though.
So cool Dan matey, it looks as though it has never been used!!! What a beauty! Thank you my friend :)

I thought I would post this in here as well, I have no idea if Sears asked for the Checker work? or if it was done at some later point- probably the later, but man I think it's so attractive, just a normal Stockman lifted by a nice touch!

Holy Grail knife for sure, Duncan!! Wow; thanks for pointing it out!!

Jeff matey, it looks like Evan has done the job doesn’t it?
If done while the Wood Handles are on the knife how on Earth do the not even scratch the pins- I have absolutely no idea- that’s why the people who work on these knives I admire their skill sets so so much.
Being wood possibly pressed??
Would love someone to help educate me on that 👍

Duncan, on closer inspection of the photos it does look like the pattern may be pressed into the wood before assembly. Still looks great, though!

I can only imagine the checkering is original or the knife was disassembled ,checkered and re pinned...how else could they get the checkering under the pins?
Who cares? Looks fantastic....up there with Schrades rope cut jigging which is one of my favourites.
Cheers.

Breakthrough!

This Knife in the photo's is a perfect match to yours - different Bone colouring, Same exact size, same exact blades and placements, same Tang stamping......
Not my photo's I heisted them hehehe

As we know if the Knife doesn't have a Sears number, or etc - and its not in the Catalog- good luck in finding it- your sources lie outside in the big net in a dark corner - somewhere, I found that knife of yours with the etch and the number- that's what we want is that number - so here it is...

9487 is your knife, so catalog time, the big question now is can we find 9487 in the Catalogs?

The Year 1948, This catalog page is the first Catalog page from starting 1942 to give a knife that fits size and Blades and the number 9487.
3rd vertical column from the left, Knife L, The description reads:
3 Blade Pocket Knife, Has three High carbon steel blades: One Clip, one Spey, one Pen.rustproof Solid Brass Lining, Rust resistant Nickel Plated Bolsters. Attractive plastic Handle. 3 & 1/8 inches long. also what looks to be tip Bolsters in a very poor diagram.

So... we want better than Tip bolsters...

Next is better..
The Year 1949, third column from the left, second Knife down - Knife L.
We have the perfect Bolsters, we have the perfect size, we have the perfect Blades in the perfect position, the only thing is the Plastic "Stag Type handles.

All these Knives with Catalog years are the exact same Knife number 9487 with perfect everything other than handle materials: 1950 simulated Plastic stag handle, 1951 simulated Plastic stag handle, 1952 wooden handle, 1954 Simulated Stag plastic Handle, 1955 plastic Handle. 1956 Durable Stag Type Handle, 1957 simulated Stag. 1958 Simulated Stag, 1960 Bonite Stag type Handles. 1961 Bonite Stag Type handles, 1962 Jet black handles .........9487 now drops off the Catalog pages and is not mentioned again ( I stopped looking at 1974).

Summary:
Charlie, your Knife is a Sears Craftsman Knife 9487.
9487
being Composite handles shown in the only two catalog pages we have so far showing us this exact same sized Knife and Blade and blade positioning, we can lay money on it that the Genuine Bone Stag Handles 9487 is between 1942 and 1948 simply not shown in a Catalog page ( that we have found yet anyway).

I've been a Craftsman owner and user all my adult life, the closest Sears store to us was in Rocky Mount (we only had a catalog store when I was growing up). I have a few Craftsman knives to add to this thread (great thread by the way). ACA - Amazing Cutting Edge knives with a 1977-78 catalog page. OH
