Hi folks.

Large or small 21? I know this question has come up before, and I really have tried to not ask the question, but my head hurts...I need help. I've read several threads and watched I don't know how many hours of videos. Stared at numerous size comparison pics, still unsure. I've read that those who buy large seldom buy the small after; those that buy the small almost always buy the large as well -- which maybe speaks to the large's importance or staying power. Btw, to my eye, the large looks to have more than just .75" more length. I'd love to see some pics with measurements of both.

I have been leaning toward the small insingo micarta, but don't want to feel as though I should have gone with the large when the small arrives, or visa versa -- especially when considering the cost. My location and schedule don't allow for a hands on viewing, which makes the decision more of a crap shoot. Buy both might be a solution, if they weren't so pricey. Perhaps down the road I will own both sizes, but at this time, there are funds for just one. Another note, is that if I were to get the small micarta, I would likely go with a large zaan down the road.

My knife history: I'm new to the knife carrying world really. Though I suppose I've always enjoyed having one, bought a Buck 110 about 25 yrs ago, which sits in its sheath only to come out for admiring once a year or so. Only last month have I started carrying a knife and to be honest, I don't know how I've got along without. I've found it quite handy using it numerous times for various tasks. That knife was a benchmade 470-1, then I picked up a 940. I immediately parked the 470 when I handled the 940, it was just perfect size for my hands. I found the 470 was a little difficulty to handle due to its smaller 4" handle length (thus my fear of the small seb), the 940's 4.375 handle is perfect. So the 470 was sold off just yesterday, funds to be directed to a sebenza.

I know the small sebenza is wider than the 470 so perhaps it will appear and feel larger than the 470, but will it be enough is the question. The large will be another .375" longer than the 940, does that make it less pocketable for jeans on a daily schedule? Too big for my needs?

Me and my uses? Well, it would be an EDC for simple cutting tasks around home and work. A companion. Maybe the odd food prep in the lunchroom. Work being a casual office environment where I'm in jeans every day. My work involves pre-press production for a printing company, so it's not like coworkers will freak if I were to pull out the large at work, these people work with machinery and tools all day. That said, not many people actually carry a knife in my area, so I'm sure the large seb would look huge to most people. Most of my day is spent sitting at a computer, I will be carrying front right pocket. I'm in Canada, where both sizes work from a legal stand point. While I do love the outdoors, I don't do any hunting, and doubt the knife would see much heavy labour, she'd be more for carrying and just there in case. If my body size is a factor, I'm 5'11, 200 lbs, wear a L-XL/10-11 glove.

Here's a pic of how the 940 looks in my hand:

I'll be making a purchase Tuesday, your opinion would be appreciated. And of course, pics will be added.

Cheers,
Sean

Edit: I should also mention that the 940 *may* be sold off to help fund the seb purchase. Not sure I'd need both since at this point I wouldn't consider myself a collector. I won't rush into that decision, thought it was worth mentioning.

Edit 2: in Canada, our laws don't allow or justify the need for a "tactical" folder. Absolute rubbish, but I'd be in a heap of trouble if I were to pull a knife to defend my life or that of a loved one.

Sean, just as a data point, maybe look here for a comparo of the small Sebenza 21 and Spyderco Para Military 2.

I here is a little look at the small v. large.

From your post I think you will want the large Seb. I prefer the small, but I have smaller hands, and like a knife that carries easy and is very light.

By the looks of your hand I would go with the Large ~~ I had 2 Small ones and sold both and now have 3 Large Seb's
and very happy with the large ones and your hands look like about the same size as mine.! You won't regret it.**

IMO i would get the large, because it was the original sebenza size im pretty sure and it is just that much more comfortable in hand. I have had two smalls, and 3 large sebenzas and now i have 1 large inlay and my umnum. Many people love the small but for me the knife is already so compact that the difference between the two in weight and how it feels it pocket is almost unnoticeable.

Large. I've never wished I had been carrying a smaller knife. Quite often wished I had a larger one. And the large Seb is still very good at small tasks.

I've got both and actually thinking about selling the small lately since large does it all.

Advantages of the small:
1 - less threatening to Co workers
2 - lighter and smaller in pocket

Advantages of the large:
1 - everything else

Damn, I had my 940 next to my sebs yesterday wondering about the same size comparison and I didn't take any pics. The large and 940 is similar in length; the small pockets easier than the 940 due to the obvious size difference. Because of this, I tend to grab the small more often.

I have M/L sized hands. The base of the small fits nicely in the palm of my hand, which is why the ergos works for me. The large has more than enough handle grip in my hand, same as the 940. Best I can do is to give pics of a large and small in my hands; sorry, no 940 one for comparison.

I don't normally carry a knife but when I do it is always a Small Sebenza. Mostly for the same reasons that have been mentioned already. If I were you and I am not.. I would start with a small and work my way up to the large. That way you can enjoy the experience and pride of ownership that comes with having two of the finest production folders (IMHO) made today!! Of course then they will start to multiply.. :D
All the best, Dave

For most urban EDC usage, I found the small not to be any disadvantage compared to the large.
The small gets taken with me 90% of the time for the unobtrusive and oblivious presence or rather the lack of it.

It should be mentioned that the large is a little more at home in the outdoors, if that's part of your future knife use. I've never wished I had a smaller blade for woods use.

If you keep the 940 I'd use that as my smaller blade and get the large. It sounds like that's what you don't have. Buuuuut...if you plan on just having a nicer knife for EDC then the small is great. I like my large better but I carry the small during the week because it's perfect for EDC tasks and it's purty with the wood inlay.

I have both large and small and during the week it is mostly the small. Seems to do everything I need with ease, we seem to have the same work enviroment. Everyone knows me so it does not matter what I pull our large or small no one is up set. I would go with the small and I have to tell you this.....you will get one of the other size at some point.....it just happens. You will love either one you get. Welcome to the club.

I carry a large in my pocket and a small in my shirt pocket. The small gets used all the time. My 1st CRK was a large and I thought I would not like the small because I already had other knives in that size. Then, I bought a small and absolutely love them(6 to be exact). Once you have one in your possession either small or large you'll understand the quality of knife you have. All my other knives(Benchmades,Spyderco's,Kershaws are lonely now and will be looking for new homes.

I prefer a large but looking at your statement; "Another note, is that if I were to get the small micarta, I would likely go with a large zaan down the road." That might be the best way to go for you. I have heard others say a small with the inlays tends to fill your hand more so it might be perfect for you. Also others have said the insingo blade is perfect for food prep. Notice I have to base this all off others comments because I have no smalls or insingo blades but they sure are popular and based on your comments it might be perfect for you. That is until you get a Zaan. :D

Good luck with your decision!

I got a Sm 21, 25, and then a Lg 21 yesterday. The Lg 21 is definitely my favorite out of my CRK folders. I like the Sm 21 for the EDC but I can't see carrying it now that I have the Lg. Ultimately, I feel as if the Large sebenza is just the best example of the Sebenza, if that makes sense?

The 'small' is a small knife, while the large is just a knife. I agree that the large 21 is 'the Sebenza'. You will not consider it a large knife, until maybe you deploy it in public.
