Sebenza 21 size...sorry!

I think that if you're comfortable with the 940, you'll be comfortable with the large, and probably not satisfied with the small.

Sean, just as a data point, maybe look here for a comparo of the small Sebenza 21 and Spyderco Para Military 2.

I here is a little look at the small v. large.

Thanks for that thread powernoodle, I missed that one. You mention in that thread that a "medium" sebenza would be a good idea. That same thought had crossed my mind, sign me up!

Wow, I've never seen one with the Damascus pattern on the handle, is that CNC'd or CGG or by hand? That really looks good.

It's a CGG pattern. I came across it in my search for my first seb; sharing my b-day helped. It's cool, the damascus pattern in the alignment hole kinda matches up to the CGG.

But I digress and apologize for going OT here. To make it up, here are some comparison photos with a 940 in it for reference. It's kind hard to make out, but a non-inlay small has the same width as 940. Small seb inlay is more narrow if you add 940's thumb studs. The large seb is wider than both.

Damn, I had my 940 next to my sebs yesterday wondering about the same size comparison and I didn't take any pics. The large and 940 is similar in length; the small pockets easier than the 940 due to the obvious size difference. Because of this, I tend to grab the small more often.

I have M/L sized hands. The base of the small fits nicely in the palm of my hand, which is why the ergos works for me. The large has more than enough handle grip in my hand, same as the 940. Best I can do is to give pics of a large and small in my hands; sorry, no 940 one for comparison.

Thanks for those pics coiledwire. The insingo is the blade I'll be buying with the small, looks great and seems like it would be more useful in that size compared to the drop point regular version.

If you can swing a pic of the two sizes sitting next to the 940 without much trouble, I'd surely be greatful.

I have both large and small and during the week it is mostly the small. Seems to do everything I need with ease, we seem to have the same work enviroment. Everyone knows me so it does not matter what I pull our large or small no one is up set. I would go with the small and I have to tell you this.....you will get one of the other size at some point.....it just happens. You will love either one you get. Welcome to the club.

Thanks birdhunter. As I read all these great responses, I am realizing there really doesn't seem to be a wrong choice, and that both sizes may be inevitable. Maybe a small as a first since I'm mostly in the office, and a large later if I feel I need a larger piece?? Man this is tough choosing just one, or a first one.

If you keep the 940 I'd use that as my smaller blade and get the large. It sounds like that's what you don't have. Buuuuut...if you plan on just having a nicer knife for EDC then the small is great. I like my large better but I carry the small during the week because it's perfect for EDC tasks and it's purty with the wood inlay.

I do like the 940 but not sure how it will fit in with the two I'm considering since it's sort of between the two, size-wise. And I think I'd be reaching for the sebenza as an edc. Maybe I'll keep the 940 for rough use.

I prefer a large but looking at your statement; "Another note, is that if I were to get the small micarta, I would likely go with a large zaan down the road." That might be the best way to go for you. I have heard others say a small with the inlays tends to fill your hand more so it might be perfect for you. Also others have said the insingo blade is perfect for food prep. Notice I have to base this all off others comments because I have no smalls or insingo blades but they sure are popular and based on your comments it might be perfect for you. That is until you get a Zaan. :D

Good luck with your decision!

Ha, I had decided on the umnumzaan a few days ago, but the only version available to me in Canada is the tanto blade which really doesn't appeal to me.

I definitely want silver double thumb studs which means I have these three to choose from:

Small insingo micarta
Large insigo micarta
Large insingo plain

Thanks for chiming in!

I got a Sm 21, 25, and then a Lg 21 yesterday. The Lg 21 is definitely my favorite out of my CRK folders. I like the Sm 21 for the EDC but I can't see carrying it now that I have the Lg. Ultimately, I feel as if the Large sebenza is just the best example of the Sebenza, if that makes sense?

I get that the large is "the" sebenza, seems to be the consensus. Nice collection of CRK you have there. I had the opportunity to buy a 25 locally, but didn't think the dedicated grip would be for me so I didn't get to see it.

Excellent! Very helpful and much appreciated! I'll be referencing these pics over the next couple days. My immediate impression is that the small seb is much smaller than the large is larger.

Tough question.
From the usage you describe i think the small, from your glove size i think the large is the way to go.
While the large is "the Sebenza" the small does everything you need in an urban environment.

Maybe a comparison of the weight can help you reach a decision.
BM 940: 2.9 oz
sm Seb: 3.0 oz
lg Seb: 4.7 oz.

I carry mine in a belt pouch and only recently switched to the small, because of the weight.

The mid size Sebenza: IIRC the TiLock has this place.
I found that the Mnandi is my small and the small Sebenza is my medium.

Hope this helps.

^ Those weights are helpful red mag, thanks.

So, I printed out powernoodle's comparison pic to scale, mounted to cardboard, then cut out the small and large (see below). I'll admit the excersize did feel a little crazy, hehe.

and the 940 again:

The large feels better in the hand and is closer in size and feel to the 940. The small seems to want my thumb on the blade's jimping area. So for comfort and fit, the large is the winner. Now I Just need to consider the optics of the large in public. The large's blade is not much bigger than the 940's so it may not be an issue.

Having both, I'd keep the small. Large is very nice, just that I never said that the small wasn't enough knife, the small is plenty a knife.

Thanks hwanjino. After playing with both of my models today, I'm leaning toward the small. I don't think it will be a let down in any way as an EDC and is likely more than capable of anything I can put it though. Besides, nothing wrong with adding a larger knife down the road if feel the need, right?

Purchase update tomorrow noon!

You should do a give away. Cardboardenza's!

....

That has to be the most clever way to judge the size of knives I've seen! At first I was like, "wow, he got my same knives quick!" Lol!

The insingo is like a razor. My top 2 wishes of my short time into CRK is a damascus insingo and a micarta mnandi. Be careful, sebs do multiply in a blink of an eye!

Just promise us those cardboard cutouts won't end up on eBay as 'Sebenza prototype'. Fooled my at a glance. I thought you bought both!

Thanks coiledwire. Like I said, it seemed a little silly, but it did prove to be helpful. I'm really looking forward to carrying my first CRK! Order placed with TNK, should have it within a couple days.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thanks everyone who weighed in, your opinion is much appreciated.

Glad you pulled the trigger. As I said, I like my small 21 more than I thought I would. Fits in the pocket great (not that the large doesn't).
