Sebenza 31 Converts?

I think it's worked out now. So, in case anyone reading this has a similar situation, I played with it long enough to figure out where I wanted to set the pivot "tension", then used the Loktite that came with the knife to set it right there...then let it sit for 36 hours.

Now it has the smoothness I like and I can't detect any blade play. It feels much more like a 21 or Regular. Victory! If the pivot screw will stay put, I'll be a happy camper.

This is a solution. Over time, as the washer wear a bit, u should be able to crank that pivot down completely and not be depentant of loctite to keep it in place.

I think the reason my pivot backed out is the heavy hard hitting click we now get with the ceramic interface and the vibrations that comes with it. If it ever happens again it's time for some blue loctite.

The 31 uses a piviot bushing, it is designed to be snugged up. If when its assembled correctly and tight and is very tough to open its either, Not broken in yet, dirty or faulty.
All you will do by loosening the pivot is prevent the knife from breaking in completely as the initial resistance is washers and blade mating up.

I had to tweak my small over the course of the break in. Ran it a bit loose in the pivot for a while and eventually was able to get to the point that I can snug the screw right down without any difference.

For a while I thought it wouldn't ever happen, then one day... BOOM!

The large that Kettleman Kettleman so generously sent me for a spin wasn't anything like that. I'm pretty sure I've read here that the smalls take more breaking in, but I could be mistaken. The labor of love made it all the more worthwhile...😁

Maybe it is a small issue? Both of the L31 Ive bought broken in in a week to as smooth as any 21 I have owned.

My small 31 broke in as expected. I think it took about a week. The pivot screw is set tight on that one and the blade is nice and smooth.

Loctite works for now. As 353 353 said, it isn't an alteration. If I'm wrong and something else changes, no biggie. If it wears and get's loose all I'll need to do it tighten it up a bit.

I'm wondering why they ship Loctite in the box if the pivot screw is meant to snug up? Does anyone know?

Edit: Never mind. Some Googling leads me to believe that this isn't a new question. ;) I don't mind a little Loctite.

I think there is, from time to time, a little unintended variance in the height of the pivot bushing from the factory. I've had one that responded a little too readily to pivot tension, but I don't find that to be the norm. Mine are all tightened down and tidy with no unexpected behavior.

No idea honestly, it wasn't anything I was particularly worried about at the time. Just figured it was a quirk to a new knife, it's all good now.

I have a spare blade on order, so maybe when it returns to the mother ship for the fitting I'll get some insight. 🤷‍♂️

You are ordering a spare blade ahead of time in preparation for the future? If so, that's smart! I might need to do the same thing. Two knives, then two blades over the next year.

Should be set for the rest of my life.

That was my idea anyway. That way if for some reason the 31 is discontinued I'll have an extra blade... I ordered it before I learned that they plan on doing a run of blades for the 21s, so it's probably a non issue. Just thought it seemed like a good plan.

What do you know about the 21 run? I have a 21 small insingo CF that I'd like to have rebladed...but I thought that was no longer possible.

did they give you an estimate of how long this is gonna take? ive been considering that too for my 31.

When I asked about MagnaCut blades for 21s I think they said late this or early next year. I know I posted about it at the time. I’m sure it will eventually happen but honestly if we see it 2024 I’ll be surprised.

All that said, unless my lifestyle changes it will be a decade or two before I wear out my current 21. Not that I expect logic or reason to dictate my own or anyone else’s knife buying behavior.

please keep us posted!
Most certainly will do. 👍

I couldn't remember who'd posted about it, thanks.

My knives that see regular carry and heavy use tend to last about 3-5 years. I know it's not exactly reasonable to think out that far. For all I know I could lose it in that time, but it's more affordable than just having another knife kicking around gathering dust until I'm ready for it.

In my opinion, that sort of thinking is totally reasonable. When you find a knife that you really, really like and it fits all your needs, then it's wise to make sure that you can reblade it down the road without depending on a company's future decisions.

If I had the foresight to get two more blades fitted to my favorite Regular, then I wouldn't be buying knife after knife now in an effort to find a new favorite.

That, and if you have two of your favorite knife, then losing one won't kill ya. I hate to admit it, but I have two of everything I really want to have around, if I can get two. It's an expensive (and probably silly) OCD thing.

I ordered a magnacut blade for a Inkosi in June this year. It ship date is April 2024

but im guessing you dont have to send your knife until like march ish right? see i foolishly thought hey maybe i can score a insingo with insert 31 and swapped the blade to my pj

That may or may not work as the washers are tuned to each knife. No you send the knife when they call about the blade being ready and you get it back in a couple weeks.
