Sebenza 31 Converts?

U didnt like it?

oh no, i love it, its just tanto for me is not the most functional of bladeshapes, i had a bunch of ebay points back in 2017 so i got one at a discounted price. Ive come to learn my favorite is actually the insingo blade. Only now am I giving the drop point a shot. It was so played out to me so I didnt buy one back then.

After 2 weeks the lanyard had to go.

I really tried to like it but the rattling, fraying from contact with the blade tip and the fact that the noose loosens and need to be tightened all the time drove me mad.

Now none of them have a lanyard, only reason the insingo have the pin is that it is needed to have the full backspacer installed.

I hear ya. It's the job of my last CRK to cut the lanyard off of the new one. I cut 'em off before I even open the new knife. Just not my thing.

Technical question:

How tight do y'all run your 31 pivots? I'm finding that I flat-out prefer it loose (a bit less than finger tight with a 1/4 bit). The action feels much like a Regular and there's only the tiniest bit of side-to-side blade play (if you really try to detect it). Not ideal, but I'm OK with it.

As I've mentioned before, if I tighten the pivot screw (like 21s) it's a two-handed job to open the blade. But, could this be assembly error on my part? The last time I cleaned it it worked fine with the pivot screw tightened. This time, it's too tight. Too much lube? Too little?

On previous gens I've always assembled the slabs first, tightened the screws, then inserted the blade/bushing/washers into the slab and install the pivot. I'm certain that the washers are not pinched.

I'm getting the feeling that I'm doing something wrong when it comes to the 31.

The tightness of the pivot should have no bearing (small pun intended) on any blade play, my guess is that the pivot bushing isn't completely flat in the blade; that would be the first thing I would check.

I reassemble as you do - though I don't totally cinch the body screws down prior to the inserting the blade. I don't crank the pivot down, but I go finger tight plus.

If you tighten the stop pin screw before inserting the blade assembly, you can still crimp the outer edge of a washer. This is not a pinched washer, per se, but it can develop a little burr.

If you can't get it settled by reinstalling the bushing, have a look at the outer circumference of both washers, especially the large. If it's out of flat, you can knock it back down on ceramic.

I tighten the rear back spacer screw, but back off the tension on the stop pin a smidge. Hand tight but not cranked down.

I reassembled it today with very little grease, and in the manner of a Hinderer (pivot screw tight, then tighten the rest). It's still way too tight when the pivot screw is tightened. I called in and they told me that I was welcome to send it in for free service, but it sounds like I'll have to pay shipping.

I locktited the pivot screw while backed out 1/16 turn from finger tight. When it dries in a day or two I'll give it another shot and see if the blade is solid.

Thanks for the suggestions All!

I actually find that the harder I tighten my 21 the tighter the action is. I think there is some microscopic (wrong word, but you get the point) compliance in the titanium, bronze, steel assembly that does respond to tightening force. It’s minute, but it’s there. I snug it up when I reassemble, the action is smooth as oiled glass, but on occasion when I over tighten I can feel it.

So, I agree that once snug there is no play, but overly snug does have an effect on the action.

No, you are right, I was specifically referencing blade play as Jacob asked; not particularly the action itself. Even that is within reason I guess, I mean the blade would likely have quite a bit of play if the pivot were really loose.

👍 wasn’t disagreeing at all, I understood your point, just adding to it.

I tighten mine completely. After a couple of 100's of cycling it it backed out on me, never had that happen before.

So I tightened it even more with a good driver. Pivot screw has been in place ever since and action is good, not stiff at all.

I think your washers could need some lapping or stropping. Or if u live in the US I would send it in.

I think it's worked out now. So, in case anyone reading this has a similar situation, I played with it long enough to figure out where I wanted to set the pivot "tension", then used the Loktite that came with the knife to set it right there...then let it sit for 36 hours.

Now it has the smoothness I like and I can't detect any blade play. It feels much more like a 21 or Regular. Victory! If the pivot screw will stay put, I'll be a happy camper.
